Don't hear much about east of Atlanta. How is the MARTA east-west line and is the Stone Mountain area a possibility for $200-$250k home with a 1-hour commute to 5 points? Is it relatively safe out that way?

Well, there is Stone Mountain addresses and homes that are actually in the City of Stone Mountain - a historic little village with a train that goes through the center, just 3/4 mile from the West Gate Entrance to Stone Mountain Park. The city is 1 square mile. Unless things have changed drastically in Stone Mountain Village in the past four years, it is generally safe and walkable. It's only 15 miles east of downtown. You just hop onto Hwy 78 to 285 or you can take Memorial Drive to 285 or Main Street down to I-20 and across.

There's a much wider area with Stone Mountain addresses, some of which are not very safe or nice areas. It really depends. There are some really upscale areas (Smokerise for instance) and some kind of transitional areas. You will really need to check for yourself. The racial makeup is quite diverse - some areas are primarily black (Shermantown), others are primarily white (Stone Mountain Country Club, Smokerise). Stone Mountain Village is about half and half.

The commute is no worse than from any other suburb and home prices are still fairly reasonable. MARTA runs buses into the Village, but no train. You can get on the train at Kensington Station off of Memorial Drive though. It's only a few miles.

We lived in Stone Mountain Village for five years and really enjoyed walking to restaurants and doing all of our Christmas shopping in the shops. There's been quite a bit of turnover in the shops since that time, but I'm sure they'll fill back up and the community will grow. It's a very quaint area with a lot of history and is so convenient to downtown - plus, you can walk into Stone Mountain Park for free. A lot of locals walk the trails there for exercise.

They have a very active Womans Club as well.
