My husband and I just made an offer on a new construction house in Lawrenceville, off of Scenic Hwy. near the Avenues. We will be in the Brookwood cluster (right next to Alton C. Crews Middle). My husband is an attorney and we think it will be great for him to be near the courthouse. We are really excited, as this is our first house. We are both originally from really diverse areas, and it is important to us that our kids grow up safe, but surrounded by people that don't look exactly like them. We love feeling like we live in a community, but a community that is evolving. From everything I have read on the forums it seems that this is a good place for us.

But, of course, we are nervous. This is a big decision! So, would you mind indulging me and giving me some feedback based on the above statements. Also, my husband will be commuting to Norcross (Peachtree Corner area) for work...is that a terrible drive? I will be starting a nonprofit, and working from home originally, so I am not worried about a commute.

Thanks so much for any feedback. Love all the threads here! So informative!

I think the move is fine. One thing, however, I hope you did'nt pay much for your house (meaning near market value). There are plenty - and I mean plenty of deals.

That's a nice area near the avenues. They had just finished building that before I moved away to North Carolina. The commute to Norcross could be tricky. It just depends on what route you take. Gwinnett County traffic is horrible. I have lived in Lawrenceville and Duluth. The problem is the suburban sprawl. I mean, so much of an influx of people, but same amount of roads. It's a great area for living and shopping and schools. But like all of Atlanta, you just have to figure out how to beat the band and not be stuck in traffic if you can help it. If your husband is working a 9-5 though, this may be unavoidable.

Good choice on seeking diversity! Gwinnett is one of the best areas for this. No one looks the same. I remember walking in a bank when I first moved to Atlanta, and I was amazed that every teller was from a different country! What?!

Thank God you're working from home. When I moved to Atlanta in 2002, they had the second worse traffic in the nation, 2nd only to L.A. When I moved away in 2007 after nursing school, they had dropped to #4. Remember one thing, rush hour on Friday starts at 2pm and ends at 9am Saturday morning. No joke.

Good Luck! You'll enjoy your home for sure. The Avenues is nice big box shopping as well.

I live very close to your new home, off of Ronald Reagan Parkway in Lawrenceville. We go to the Avenue often for shopping and dining, so I know it really well. It's a great area, we love it here. Traffic on Scenic Highway can be very very bad, but other than that, it's really nice. I hope you enjoy it here!

Thanks for the feedback. We did get a good deal on the house...really good. Another one of the reasons we were drawn to the area!

One thing is for sure...you are near some great shopping You probably won't have to travel outside of that area for your shopping needs. Your husband's drive won't be as bad as say, someone driving to midtown ATL, but as he travels different routes back and forth to work, he will find the quickest route for his work hours. At least he is living and working in the same county...that makes a difference for the average commuter.

Not sure where in Norcross he will be working, but make sure he tries the typical 316 to 85 route and also the Lawrenceville Highway (Highwy 29) route. He may prefer one on his way to work and another on his way home. Trial and error.

Welcome to Gwinnett! You are also only minutes away from Lawrenceville's downtown square (124 until it ends at East Crogan Street). There are great family festivals and events there year round; also fine dining.

Congratulations on the good deal...I'm sure you were able to come in WELL below market value, which is especially good for being the Brookwood cluster. Great schools, as well. Hubby's commute will be a nuisance due to distance & traffic, but not intolerable. Very diverse area. Traffic on Scenic can be god-awful on Friday evening and definitely around the holidays. Great shopping options, however. Welcome!
