East Atlanta/Decatur (rentals, low crime, neighborhoods)

I am looking for a good area on the eastside to rent that is in walking distance of the MARTA rail line. The areas I am looking into are Inman Park, Edgewood, Kirkwood, East Lake, Decatur, and Avondale.

Preferably I would prefer an area with low crime, but a few break-ins or other petty crimes are nothing I would be worried about. I would like to pay no more than $800/month in rent. Any suggestions on the best place to look? Thanks for any info.

I can say that I am in Kirkwood, walking distance from the East Lake Marta station. I looked at rentals right around here at the end of last summer for a friend and couldn't find anything less than $1000/month. Of course times have changed since then! Note that the neighborhood of East Lake is not walking distance to the Marta line. The East Lake station refers to the street East Lake Ave., not the neighborhood. The station is right on the border between Kirkwood and Oakhurst to the south and Lake Claire to the north. You will probably have a tough time finding a rental walking distance to the Decatur station (because of price) or the Avondale station (because of stock of rental property). Any of these neighborhoods would fit your requirements in terms of crime though (Edgewood and Kirkwood, maybe a bit higher; but little violent crime in any of these neighborhoods).

Check out this firm's website...the properties that they manage in Decatur are all walkable to the MARTA station.
