Marta Rail lines off Thornton rd. I keep seeing Marta Rail lines off Thornton rd, but never hear anything about it. Is Marta coming to Austell or Powder Springs?

Where are you seeing Marta rail lines off Thornton rd. There are plans to extend the west line which currently ends at Holmes Station to Fulton Industrial Blvd but they don't have any money for it yet. Even if they did do it, it looks like it would be BRT instead of heavy rail.

Marta can't legally go to Thornton Rd, Powder Springs or Austell because they are not in Fulton or Dekalb County. If Douglas or Cobb county wanted to vote them in then we would see, but for now I hope you like driving.

When you pass the Treadmill trade Mall going north.. its on the right... It looked like a light rail car in a covered area.

I'm not sure what it is. I would guess it is some sort of storage or testing spot but I really don't know. I don't get to travel out there much so I probably won't get to go take a look, I'll ask around at Marta though.

could be a repair facility, they are at the end of the line usually and that would be the cheapest place to put one

Default Marta Powder Springs

It is an experiment by some guy for train magnetics. Here is the article:

As was stated above, it's a test facility... though it's an actual established company that is running it and not "some guy". lol

American Maglev is a company that is pushing for Maglev technology - basically, subway type cars that "float" on magnets, allowing them to travel at high rates of speed. There are working Maglevs in Japan and France - maybe Germany too I think... but of course, we're far behind them in rail technology here due to our love of the automobile.

The Powder Springs test area is not open to the public, but sometimes they allow media inside.

Direct link to their site and info on it: AMT - Mass Transit For The Future - Test Track - Powder Springs, Ga

I live not far from it, and it caused a near riot amonst public transit haters around here when they THOUGHT that Marta was expanding this way. They nearly lit torches and went to the streets.
