Anyone have this done and have an idea of the cost or have a recommendation?

My neighbors had theirs removed and it cost $300. That was just to remove it through their whole house, and not to repaint over it once it was all down. The company that did it were pretty much all Mexican workers and no one spoke any English except the owner, but they did a decent job. Unfortuantely those folks have since moved but I'll try to contact them and see who it was.

I must be the only person left who LIKES popcorn texture on ceilings. I think it's funky. I blame those HGTV real estate shows for brainwashing people into thinking it's bad.

Default thanks

Thank you for trying to find out who it was....i will admit i don't HATE it, but my husband does and it is annoying when you clean and parts f the ceiling fall off

He is thinking to take on the project himself and I am thinking when hell freezes over

Yeah, it's MESSY, I know that.

Hey, you could tell him you're going to paint the ceiling black, but leave some of the popcorns white, so that you can pretend you're looking at the stars at night - see how that works.

we had some stiple removed in a a couple of rooms when we remodeled. Two words: NEVER AGAIN. That is a messy, miserable process. Months later, I am still cleaning up that fine white dust. I don't care how much they cover, it finds its place into every nook and cranny. Greg has it right with the paint, I would just paint it a nice neutral light color and it should look great.

Good luck!

You might want to break off a piece and have it tested for asbestos first. Depending on the age of the house, it may contain asbestos and scraping it off can aggitate the particles and leave them airborne for you to breathe in. Do a search on the topic to see what I am referring to.

Isn't it easier to just tear it out and hang a new ceiling? We have it in two rooms in our house, and I'd already concluded that we would just rip it out when we remodel.

That is exactly my plan. Except that I'm NOT gonna cover up those cool exposed rafters; just gonna refinish 'em.

Just think how it easy it'll be to hang a ceiling fan wherever ya like...a light fixture wherever ya like, etc.

I second the suggestion to have the ceiling tested for asbestos.

My mom recently died of mesothelioma caused by asbestos exposure (most likely from home exposure). It only takes a a few microscopic fibers to lodge in your lungs, so you don't want to fool around with any materials containing asbestos.

One of the reasons we wouldn't even consider mid-century Atlanta houses when we were house hunting...

You must be the only one that likes popcorn ceilings. They are tacky as hell and so seventies.
