Can your daughter not get in the dorms? My son missed the housing deadline last year and we frantically looked for housing last summer. He ended up with a roommate he found on craigslist until Christmas and then moved out with a new friend into an apartment in Buckhead for the rest of the school year. Even though he was within walking distance at his first place, Edgewood and Hillard, I felt he was much safer in Buckhead. He is in the dorms this year. Is she going to be by herself or does she have a roommate that she already knows?

University Place at Underground is not as bad as people think. Although 5 Points isn't the best, you get used to it. Every since I have moved in here, since April, I have enjoyed it ! It is in great proximity. I do my grocery shopping at Publix at Atlantic Station or AUC. Contrary to popular opinion, this is a great place to live and get groceries; the access to a rail station means I never have to drive anywhere. I can ride the train to Midtown station at shop at the Publix near Tech, or the Krogers near L5P. I wouldn't trade this for anything.

Due to the popular misconception about this area, I believe, it causes our rent to be much cheaper. I pay $500 for my own private space. This would cost over a thousand around the corner at the GSU dorms. And I do not have to be bothered with any roommates. Also, utilities included, and I have a great view of the city. I would definitely advise people to reconsider it !

Also, I have a great bathroom and living room space. It is basically like living in a hotel, with a great rate. This is a steal, I would say, compared to what the kids are forced to pay in the so-called "dorms".

Yes .I would have to agree. There are strange people near the Marta Station ,but there is so much foot traffic going on and its so visible,I don't see it as a major problem.Just not always nice to look at (in parts) but its probably safer or as safe as Home Park.I mean really, you are just a few steps close to MARTA, where you are RIGHT there!! You get on an go any direction in minutes. When you look at the crime reports ,its usually petty crimes.Nothing really major.

Default Don't waste your money at University Place at Underground

University Place at Underground: I live here and can't wait to get out of my lease. I have seen so many people get hurt around here. 3 got shot, 2 got stabbed (one was a police officer). The security here is not armed and really doesn't do anything but harass the guests. If you do have guests you must go get them and escort them for their entire stay (even if they are your parents or people who pose no threat). They have a policy that states you cannot have a guest spend more than 3 nights in a row or 6 nights in one month and they enforce it by making guests sign in. The windows are bolted shut and in the winter they run the heat in the building and the air in the rooms has broken at least 30 times since I have lived here so it's really hot and there is nothing you can do about it. Maintenance is slow to fix things and there is no kitchen, just a mini-fridge and a small sink. The treadmill has been broken for about 9 months and management knows about it but will not invest in fixing it. I complained to corporate about maintenance issues and various policies but they never respond. There is a $35 fee if you walk out of your apartment without your keycard and the doors lock automatically and you cannot get copies so once the door closes you are out $35. Really depressing living here

Outside of the shootings and stabbings it sounds exactly like the private dorm I lived in 12 years ago (remember Carter Hall / The Phoenix Tower?). Also, I have known people who have lived there over the years - including one that lives there now - all females, that have never mentioned these shootings of stabbings. Are you saying that people who live in the building were assaulted or people in the outside area?

The area on MLK and south of it tends to be pretty rough with lots of gang/drug activity because everything deteriorates into darkness there. So I can see that, but over in that Five points area it's hard for me to imagine somebody getting shot and a big deal not being made of it. Thought that's not to say it didn't happen.

It's strange that these daily "shootings and stabbings" so many people claim are happening seem to rarely make the news.

There was a thread a few months ago where a guy claimed that he was at the "Tuba Christmas" event at the Underground back in 2007 and saw a woman get shot in the arm. As if somebody could discharge a firearm downtown (in the much-loved Underground no less) in broad daylight with a ton of suburban kids around and this somehow not get plastered all over the news.

When I countered his ridiculous claim with data from the crime database and this bit of logic the thread was mysteriously deleted.

The time the three people got shot I was in my apartment and I heard the gun shots. It did make the news but it was only a brief story. I looked out my window and saw people running and when the people cleared out, there were two people that I could see lying on the ground. A little while later I saw a third person being brought out of the Marta area on a stretcher. It all happened right in front of Marta. I'm sure if you check the police records or the news you can find the incident. One of the men who was stabbed was next to Woodruff Park. He was apparently stabbing himself and when the police tried to stop him, he stabbed an officer and another officer shot him. This was fairly recent and most of my professors were talking about it through out the day. I don't have anything to gain by making up shootings. The last stabbing was lower on Peachtree, closer to MLK. I'm not exactly sure what happened with that one. All I know is that someone got stabbed. When I first moved here, we were issued letters about 4 muggings that had occurred, I think all of them were on GSU students but it turned out they were targeting Marta passengers. One of them was assaulted and hit his head on a concrete barrier and was hospitalized. If you think that it is safe by all means, check it out for yourself, but be careful. I’m not saying there is violence in the building at University Place at Underground but we are surrounded by it. Don’t you remember when Brian Nicolas shot all those people? Brian Nichols - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia That was at the court house just down the street and where was the first place he went, underground Atlanta parking lot to steal a car.
