How is that area? Is it ghetto? What is the main race there? are the apartment complexes nice to live in there?

Buford Highway is the "international" sector of metro Atlanta. By far, the area is dominated by Hispanics as residents, though as you get closer to I-285 there is more Asian influence (particularly Chinese and Korean) in the businesses. The southern part of Buford Hwy is a little rough (lots of convenience stores with bars in the windows, for example). The apartments along Buford Hwy itself are not the greatest. I would look for places that are further off Buford Hwy, perhaps like N Druid Hills/Briarcliff. The good news about Buford Hwy (besides the eclectic shops) is that MARTA runs a bus line from Lindbergh Station to Doraville Station right along Buford Hwy with the highest frequency of any bus service (12 min.). In fact, it's the only bus line that actually makes money for MARTA.

I'm new to the area, and really haven't driven up and down Buford much (I'm on it for a few miles to get to midtown for work). But there are several apartment complexes near the Lindbergh Marta station mentioned earlier. As far as I can tell, it is majority Caucasion with some African Americans.

It's not scary by any means. Most of the residents in the area are very well behaved (they don't want to risk deportation after an arrest). If you're a foodie and like to try new things, there are tons of good restaurants.
