Default APD chief responds to question about using Georgia National Guard to fight crime

Quote:
As he appeared for his confirmation this week, Atlanta City Council President Felicia Moore raised the issue of the Georgia National Guard: Should the city ask for assistance and bring troops in to help patrol?

"I think it is premature to talk about the military given what we are seeing," said Chief Rodney Bryant. "They are not equipped for that type of response."...

... If the guard is not the right thing to be considered, then how can commanders successfully address a myriad of issues with Atlanta being more than four hundred cops short?

Absolutely not! It's one thing to use the national guard to secure the streets during riots, but to put them on the streets in a day-to-day law enforcement capacity...its not what they are trained, equipped or built do to. Now if you can put them into back office or facility work of some capacity to free up officers to be on the streets until the ranks can be filled with the needed number of actual police then yes.

This nation and the CoA had made it through sustained periods of much higher crime without utilizing the NG, so why even broach the subject now? That's either just irrational panic or political posturing.

Yes, before more and more people die. This is ridiculous and APD clearly can't handle it. We need to send a strong message against crime and I think there's enough fed up people to support it.

Excellent take, Yoski. I would rep you if I could.

Yeah, having people untrained in law enforcement running around with with selective fire rifles attempting to enforce the law is a great idea. NOT.

Let the police do their job, calling out the guard will only be placing actual "weapons of war" on the streets.

Isn't that what liberals are trying to prevent ? Egg, meet face.

Normally I’m hard on crime and would love this. But reality is they simply aren’t trained to do this so for now, no.

Good Lord, I haven't been to Atlanta in a few months, but has crime gotten that bad up there?

No. I personally want the crime situation handled swiftly and sanely.. ..but militarizing the streets is a whole different level. What is this? Martial Law?
