Livable Centers Initiative grant to help officials examine future of Gwinnett Place Mall and surrounding area

Gwinnett County and the Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District have received a $220,000 Livable Centers Initiative grant from the Atlanta Regional Commission to work on the Gwinnett Place Mall Revitalization Strategy.

Quote:
Office space. Residential space. Green space. Walking trails and connections to nearby parks. A bus rapid transit route.

These are some of the potential uses officials could end up looking at as they prepare to figure out what the future holds for Gwinnett Place Mall property. Gwinnett County and the Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District received a $220,000 Livable Centers Initiative grant from the Atlanta Regional Commission this week to work on the Gwinnett Place Mall Revitalization Strategy.

The area has been the subject of studies in the past, such as the ACTivate Gwinnett Place plan that was released in 2015, but the county and CID couldn’t do anything to act on some of those plans because the mall was privately owned.

Two redevelopment plans emerge for Gwinnett Place Mall rebirth. Which is best?
Quote:
Following earlier community input, the redevelopment team has created two scenarios they say would create a more useful, dense, diverse, and engaging district from a legendarily moribund mall that typifies vehicle-centric, suburban development patterns of decades past...

... Both concepts would infuse the property with thousands of residences, offices, and more retail, with about 16 acres of parks and bike paths scattered throughout, replacing the bulk of Gwinnett Place’s parking lot seas. A transit hub would be built at the property’s western edge.
Two plans emerge for Gwinnett Place Mall rebirth. Which is best?
The "Gwinnett Place to Be" redevelopment team would like your 2 cents

1. Extend the fricking MARTA heavy rail to there... should have happened 30 years ago...
2. Build out a walkable mixed use district all around the station, with some high rise buildings.
3. Improve the direct access from I-85 and the managed lanes. Like maybe a new access point at Old Norcross Rd.

Man, I dunno, this is really bizarre. Not sure if I like this. So they're keeping the Macy's, Mega Mart, and Beauty Master, but tearing down the rest of the mall? The actual mall part is the only part I liked. Kind of hitting me in the nostalgia feels.

It would be one thing if a MARTA station was involved, as has been envisioned for this location for like my entire life.

I'm pretty sure those places own their buildings

Those 3 own their buildings so they have to build around it. They're basically "Avalon"-izing Gwinnett Mall. They should add an Asian food hall there as it will be a big hit.

I'd turn it into a liveable high-tech live, work, play center, to attract high paying Tech jobs. Make it self-contained.

One of the other 2 anchors is owned by the county. The last one, the old Sears, is owned by a regional apartment developer and sure enough in the renderings it shows the Sears building being torn down for Apartments.
