Most of this link is old, but it goes over the issues. The 3 northern representatives wanted the new Cross Keys built along Buford Highway in Brookhaven (says Cross Keys has 1300 students). A lot of people wanted a Doraville HS instead of a 2700 seat Cross Keys and 2700 seat Lakeside HS.

Thanks, bu. Nothing has changed; They're pretty much in the same holding pattern since then as far as I know. The neighborhood's destiny is in the hands of school board members that live 20 miles away and haven't a clue about the logistical impact of this decision...nor do they care to learn.

This is interesting. Would have liked to see the county build a "Brookhaven" HS instead of a new Cross Keys and a "Doraville" HS both. I know Decatur is the only city with a city system, but all of the other incorporated towns in the county have an eponymous high school.... Dunwoody, Chamblee, Tucker, Stone Mountain, Clarkston, Lithonia.

Footnote: Avondale Estates and Pine Lake don't either even tho there once was an Avondale HS.

The most pressing need in NW DeKalb is a middle school (DHMS and CMS are about four miles away from most residents west of N Druid Hills Rd). That should have been the priority for the Briarcliff property, and the existing CKHS should have been expanded and rehabbed as a high school; there is plenty of room for such a move:

But, true to form, DCSD's school board continues to show blatant contempt for the communities of NW DeKalb.

That's a durn good point. Naming it Brookhaven might give the community a greater sense of ownership and spark additional local involvement.

Part of the problem with DeKalb Schools (and DeKalb government in general) is the perception that the leadership is far away and remote from the actual communities. That's been a big factor in driving the cityhood movements around town.

I think a Brookhaven HS and Doraville HS would encourage community support. The old Cross Keys site could be the MS and a new site could be found in Doraville for either the HS or a new MS with the HS using the MS site. We've got a Tucker and Stone Mtn. HS and Lakeside could be a city if the latest cityhood proposal passes.

I think that the Northlake Mall annexation by Tucker might have been the death knell for any prospective 'new cities'; the lack of taxable commercial property in the area renders the remaining unincorporated area inviable for it. Annexation by existing cities would seem to be the only remaining option.

Vista Grove is still very much a work in progress. Most of the Northlake area is still in the Vista Grove proposal. Based on the Lakeside vote, it will pass easily (they dropped all the areas that voted no) if it gets through the legislature.
