I'm 25 and from Phoenix, AZ. It looks like I will more than likely be attending Grad School at Clark Atlanta University pretty soon. I have visited Atlanta and really like the area a lot but of course visiting and living somewhere are two totally different things. How is the young professional scene in Atlanta? I hear Midtown, Buckhead, Decatur, and Little Five Points are pretty happening places for the under 30 crowd. I don't really know anyone there so will be starting fresh. I do have a job and will be working from home when I move to ATL so employment isn't an issue (yet). Also, how is the gay community there? I know ATL has a large LGBT community but I don't really know a lot about it. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

What do you mean by employment not being an issue "yet?" You don't have to get into details but please make sure that you have employment well secured. It's expensive to move and you will be going to grad. school; you will need to have a job to pay your rent, auto expenses, etc.

Young professional scene? You can join meetup.com. A lot of the meetups have an older crowd but you will be able to find some that have a good amount of young people. Type in "young" lol.

How is the gay community? Depends on who you are (race/ethnicity, wealth status, etc.) towards how you will be treated. The community is big and Atlanta itself is pretty open. It's known to be very gay.

If you have any specific questions, please let me know. I'd be glad to help.

My suggestion would be the West End area. It is far less expensive than the other areas you mentioned, its right by CAU, and there is a sizable young, black, professional gay population. It's not as trendy as midtown, Buckhead, L5P, Or Decatur City, but it is most definitely on the rise and is one of the hottest neighborhoods in the city right now. And if you want a slightly more upscale environment, but still be close to the AUC. There is Atlantic Station, and the area that people nowadays refer to as West Midtown or "Westside".

There are plenty of areas all over Atlanta that have what you want. Just do your homework.

Thank you for the info! And by "employment not being an issue yet" I mean that I might not be working my current position for too much longer (I have another potential job offer on the table that looks promising). That's all I was saying regarding that.

Wow! Thank you for this information I will definitely look into everything you provided. You know I've heard positive things about the Castleberry Hill area but for the most part it seems like everyone says avoid the westside. I'm sure it's an exaggeration though as all the westside isn't terrible I'm sure. I do plan on having a roommate since I don't know anyone there and that would help me transition better and i don't want to have to carry all of the expenses while I'm in grad school.

Coming from AZ, you will love it out here man! Didn't you attend ASU also? thats my alma mater btw, and I few people from school moved out here the past couple years. Check out Peters Street in CH while you visit, and check out Edgewood avenue in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood. It backs up to another neighborhood Old Fourth Ward, and the the Beltline. Keep an open mind, and you will learn to adjust with the difference in pace and people compared to Arizona. Good luck!
