My husband and I are in our mid 40s with 2 college age kids. Hubby has taken a new job and we are moving from Upstate NY (Rochester area) to the Atlanta area this summer. We've been dying to get out of the cold, long winters for a few years and can't wait to enjoy some heat and humidity of the south instead!

I've read over and over about the horrible traffic and the crime SO we need to be closer to the airport (husband will be traveling a lot) AND we want to be in a safe area. I've done tons of research, but I'd love opinions of people who actually live in or know the area well!

Fairburn, Fayetteville, Stockbridge, McDonough, Loganville are the cities I've narrowed our search down to and yes, I do realize that McD and Log. are farther commutes.

Looking for:

Shopping and other amenities within a short drive
Larger yards (3/4ths of an acre at least, we have 3 dogs)
Safe neighborhood
New houses built within the last 5 - 10 years

Can anyone comment on our wish list in relation to the cities we're looking at? I do have some neighborhoods in mind for each but am interested in the overall vibe of these areas. Thanks so much!

You state that your husband will be using the Atlanta Airport a lot for air travel. But where in the Atlanta metro area will your husband be commuting to and from for work everyday?

Does your husband's job primarily consist only of air travel or will there also be someplace local that he will be commuting to and from on a regular basis?

The airport is the only consideration as far as work for my husband. He'll be working from home when he's not traveling.

Anywhere in Fayette County would probably suit you well but most shopping is concentrated near Fayetteville and Peachtree City.

Peachtree city would be your best bet on the south side. It's basically crime free with the most resturants and shops on the south side. Easy commune to the airport.

Another good option would be Vinings. The commute to the airport from there is not bad at all! I would second Peachtree City if you want to stay further south. Loganville would be a disaster of a commute - cross that one off the list!

In addition to just about anywhere in Fayette County (including Fayetteville, Peachtree City and Tyrone) and Vinings like the other posters have suggested, Newnan would also be a good option because there is a large cluster of shopping and retail amenities there anchored by the Ashley Park Mall shopping area/lifestyle center.

Newnan is also a good option because it is a straight shot to and from the airport by way of I-85 southwest of Atlanta, which is probably the least congested of the major spoke commuter routes that run in and out of Atlanta.

(Ashley Park Mall, Newnan, Georgia: Ashley Park)

Given that Loganville is about 40-45 miles away from the airport by way of routes that can sometimes experience traffic challenges, Loganville should probably fall to the very bottom of your list of areas for consideration.

Because of the severe traffic congestion that the I-75 South corridor often experiences because of its importance as a major transcontinental route connecting the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest with Florida (especially around holiday and vacation periods when travel to and from the resorts and beaches of Florida increases dramatically and often causes gridlock along I-75 south of Atlanta), Stockbridge and McDonough and Henry County should probably fall down to the bottom of your list of areas for consideration as well.

Congratulations on a potential move to Metro Atlanta!

Based on your criteria, there are many great options for you--particularly on the south and west sides of the Metro.

With the cities you already listed, scratch off Loganville. The others could work.

Here is what I recommend based on your wants/needs (large yards+acreage, safety, newer house, relatively convenient to the airport, shopping+other amenities):

1. Henry County: Look in the areas of Fairview, Stockbridge, Union Grove, McDonough, Ola, and Hampton.

2. Clayton County: Look in the areas of Lake Spivey, Jonesboro, Lovejoy, and Panhandle.

3. South Fulton County: Look in the areas of Fairburn, Stonewall-Tell, Palmetto, Chattahoochee Hills, and North Union City.

4. Coweta County: Look in the areas of Sharpsburg, Newnan, Northgate, and Senoia.

5. Fayette County: Look in the areas of Fayetteville, Tyrone, and Woolsey.

6. Douglas County: Look in the areas of Chapel Hill, New Manchester, South Douglasville, South Lithia Springs, and Alexander.

I hope this helps some. Feel free to ask me more questions.
Good Luck!
