The quote that you're referring to is from November of 2006, when the economy was still good........

I don't know about that Bob.
Granted, we are not going gangbusters or what I used to call "Development Run a Muk" but at least in Gwinnett it is still growing.
New building by the Mall of Georgia, New plazas being built on the north and south side of Dacula, new stores still coming in, and what made my jaw drop was 2 new housing developments going in close to Hamilton Mill! Now that did peeve me off considering there are so many sitting.

The Atlanta Metro area is still growing at 100k per year and driving down 85 coming into the city all I see is cranes and steel going up on the north side. By the airport, the Ford plant being demolished for a new Atlantic Station still in progress.

All in all Atlanta has weathered the storm pretty well compared to its neighbors in Florida. Now, all Atlanta City needs to do is weed out the lousy leadership and panhandlers and it can only go upward.

You are right. The city itself is only going upward. City leaders would have to do a lot to knock Atlanta off track that its currently on. Not impossible, though. I think Atlanta city has begun a transition from a typical "deep south" city (comparble to the likes of Memphis, Birmingham, and New Orleans) - majority poor, no 24-hour downtown, high crime per capita - to an international city resembling the likes of another class of cities - Miami, Washington D.C., or even Philadelphia.

By 2020, the top six metro areas by population are projected to be New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and Atlanta. I think that the city itself is beginning to catch a larger and larger percentage of the overall metro growth. And with population change, every other aspect of the city could change as well, from politics to cost of living to neighborhoods to maybe even the school system.

Not to drag on, but if these trends continue to intensify the city as a whole will be unrecognizable in 2020 from what it is today. I think this change will be comprable to the drastic changes that occurred in the 1970's due to the effects of the white flight that had been occuring since the '50's.

In any event, its an exciting time be a living in the city.

I am married with two children and we currently reside in Chicago. My husband and I would like to relocate to Atlanta by summer 2010. I wanted to know what areas would anyone suggest we move to. We have relatives that live in Atlanta and during a visit last year we looked at about a dozen townhomes and apartments. It was absolutely overwhelming because I had no idea what was considered to be suburban and what was considered to be the city. We did visit the mall which is downtown. Obviously we know where downtown is, but once you get out of the downtown area, what is considered to be the suburbs. With us having 2 small children we were wondering what is the best location to move to for them. We would need daycare for after school, and employment. I currently work in property management and he is working in retail for a large corporation. Please advise thanks. D

I know you are new, but you would want to start a new thread if you want people to address your questions.
