I have a court date on monday 12/10. I got stopped doing 47mph in a 25mph school zone. Yes, a school zone. this is my 1st ticket. I've had a license 19 yrs and no other speeding tickets. How do i fight this? Should i get an attorney? how much would that cost? I'm new in GA so i don't know how the system works here. If i plead guilty, will i have to do community service or what? I need advice ASAP!!

I hope you have a bicycle- that's gonna be a painful ticket. Have you talked to a lawyer if you're really serious about fighting it?

Why would you fight it? You admit you did it. I don't always go exactly the speed limit, but 47 in a SCHOOL ZONE??? The ticket will cost you less than an attorney. I really doubt you would get community service, just a fine. Do you have the option to just pay the fine and avoid court, or is this one of those things where you have to go? (It will say on your ticket.)

A school zone ticket is a big ticket. Get a lawyer and try and get the points knocked off. If I'm not mistaken, a school ticket is just as bad as passing a bus is stopped with its flashing lights on. Atleast, 6 points.

Either way, you are a damn nut to go almost 25 mph over the speed limit in a school zone...I could give you 5, hell even 10 because you have to adjust your speed but 22 MPH!?!?! Sorry, I can't feel too sorry for you....

In my defense, i was one block from my house and i'm a slow driver compared to the people that fly past me every day. Atlanta drivers are VERY aggressive. On the hwy, i try not to go past 70 and people are either tailgating me or blow right past me. I don't get it. Oh, and the day i got this stupid ticket, i got off from work early so i was just so happy to be headed home before 5pm that i was in a daze.

Understandable. The lawyer will be cheaper in the long run then the increase in your insurance. If this is your first ticket, you might able to plead no lo which is you get to the fine but no points but you can only use it every 5 years since you haven't gotten a ticket in 19 years, I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea to use it...

no lo contendre is the same as pleading guilty, but you receive zero points on your license. You can only plead this on certain offenses and I'm very unsure if school zone is one of them. you can only plead this once every 5 years. (i just plead this on a normal, 12 mph over speed.) as far as school zones go, I have no idea. I dont think there will be comm. svc but you can expect probably $400 or more fine.

I think I would skip the lawyer...some judges will be harsher just because you brought in a lawyer to 'get you off'. Now, if you had a case like 'The flashers weren't on, the sign was missing, school holiday, etc', maybe a lawyer could help. I wouldn't mention that I was going 47mph only one block from home...people usually slow down when that close...plus not much argument that you didn't know it was a school zone. Good luck and drive safely!
