This has been discussed on this board in great detail in the past.

There's much more at play than religious governments. I mean, do you really think that Alabama and Mississippi have more progressive governments than Georgia does? Both of these states have casinos, though I can't quite figure out how this happened when not too long ago Alabama killed Victoryland.

Anyway, it is my opinion that it is only a matter of time before we see a casino in Georgia. I'm not concerned about that. What I'm concerned about is that the property is done right and with class. Because while casinos seem great on paper and I have no moral issue with them, have you ever been in an old dingy casino? They are nasty.

That's why I say, you have to go all out Vegas style with table games, free drinks, and all the entertainment that goes with it, or else you just don't do it at all. You shouldn't half a$$ a casino.

Georgia is currently working on expansion of the Hope Scholarship through Video Lottery Terminals - which is basically Class II gaming - very similar to slot machines. They are specifically not using the term casino! I beleive both houses have passed laws and they are working on reconciling the two.

This is basically step II toward legalizing gambling in Georgia (Step I was when they approved the Lottery in the first place). Mayor Shirley Franklin when she was in office noted that we will having casino's within he next 20 years because we will have no choice to compete in the large convention market.

Casinos are very popular with the convention market and will be very desirable downtown with vistors to those hotels, the GWCC and Falcons and Hawks games.

Miami is a great city with tons to do. There has been lots of discussion in Florida about approving gambling in that area because many believe that city will BOOM and be the hottest gambling market on the east coast with the combination of what Miami has to offer along with gambling. It is the Seminole Indian Tribe in Florida that is fighting it hard since it will negatively impact their casinos west of the city.

It will happen - someday.

Why trash out our city with casinos when we've got Chattanooga and Montgomery an hour and a half away?

I agree with you on that. Just what we need - a bunch of drunks trashing DT. I was in Vegas for a conference before thanksgiving. I went out one morning around 6:00 am in search of decent coffee and was astounded by the trash all over the place. It was disgusting.

Exactly. People are acting like you need a casino to be world class. What the hell?

Inside look: Atlanta's closest casino (SLIDESHOW) - Atlanta Business Chronicle

I'm surprised that Montgomery opened a casino considering that Alabama has traditionally been anti-gambling, that is if you don't count Greyhound racing. I wonder if the climate has changed or if this was built based on some type of loophole like over a body of water or on an Indian reservation.

Actually the casino is in Wetumpka, about 20-25 miles north of Montgomery. Also the casino is on Native American land and ran by the Creek Indians. Gambling is still illegal in Alabama.

Yeah. The atty gen will of course look into the opening of this casino, but it will be a waste of time and taxpayer money IMO.
