Yea, the Astrodome is still functional too. Why don't we do like Houston considered and turn the Dome into a convention space after the falcons leave? Oh wait, that would have cost the city the same $200m+ and we are getting the new stadium, keeping the Falcons, attracting super bowls, major events, plus possibly an MLS team for the same price. Thats why.

Hopefully we pass a federal law stopping public funds going to things like this, but for now this is a great deal for Atlanta.

Yeah, let's get the Feds involved. What can go wrong?

Atlanta is getting a great deal.
Also, the state legislature passed a law a few years ago restricting how money collected by the Atlanta hotel/motel tax could be spent. It restricted it to upgrades and/or new stadiums/arenas. So if Atlanta did not use the money for that purpose, then the state could dissolve the tax.

Oh please. Like I said bright shiny n' new right?

At least for the next 20 years, or maybe only 10 this time...

The new stadum better last longer than the current one. Of course I'd like to see a stadium be in use for much longer than the 23 or so years that the Falcons will end up playing in the Georgia Dome. The fact is, the Georgia Dome is one of the worst stadiums in the NFL. The problem goes back to the Falcons approving an outdated stadium with a a hideous, circus-tent style canvas roof. The overall design is ugly. It's not up to NFL standards. I went to a game several years ago and vowed never to return because the stadium experience was not enjoyable.

Personally, I wish the Falcons played in an open-air stadium and I'd absolutely be in favor of removing the roof from the Georgia Dome and converting it to an open-air stadium, with suitable renovations. I'm not sure if that would be feasible. In any case, Atlantans are in mortal fear of an open air stadium (they might have to go to games when it's 40 degrees in the winter!) and season ticketholders complained when the Falcons originally proposed an open-air stadium, so Arthur Blank switched to the plan for the retractable roof, which will cost several hundred million dollars more to build.

It's gotten better since 2007-08 when it got new amenities and a red/black color scheme.

GWCCA already looked into it and it wasn't worth the cost. Plus, not only would the Falcons and GSU have to move during the renovation project (1-2 years), all of the events that require indoor space (SEC CG, Peach Bowl, Final Four, conventions, etc.) would go to other cities.

You obviously never went to a Falcons game at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium in late December. It sucked.

So what's going to happen to the GA Dome once this new stadium is opened?
