Sandy Springs and Roswell have more than twice the population of Marietta and Decatur (edit: in the city limits). Marietta was used before Sandy Springs and Roswell exploded though (I think).
We have two winners here...

Yes, the Metro name is based on the three largest city propers by population in the MSA. In the case of our Metro, the three largest are as follows:

City of Atlanta - 443,775 residents
City of Sandy Springs - 93,853 residents
City of Roswell - 88,346 residents

I know what it's based on....

Just wanted to see what people think!

Anyway, Roswell is nothing more than a bedroom community...

Far from a troll...Too much credibility....Obviously you don't know what a bedroom community is.

LOL

Even long term posters troll the board every now and then.

I really don't know what you're trying to prove...

The question remains...

For example, when you're riding through downtown Atlanta going north on 75 you see "Marietta/Chattanooga" exits signs not "Roswell/Chattanooga"....You don't even get to an exit sign for Roswell until exit 265 which is in Marietta by the way. Furthermore, other than living in Roswell, there's no other reason to go there....which is a bedroom community...Hard to argue that it's not....

This has always been interesting to me.

What do you guys think?
Too much of a mouthful.

So could Atlanta get one up on Minneapolis/St Pauls and become the Trio-Cities?
Absolutely not.

Organizationally, the two metros are different enough that some comparisons are difficult.

The Twin Cities has two cities over 200,000 (Minneapolis is 390,000, St. Paul is 290,000) which directly border each other even though the two downtown skylines are roughly 12 miles apart:

Of course, Atlanta (420,000, only 30,000 larger than Minneapolis ) probably has that many buildings all by itself between the main skyline and Buckhead, but I don't think there's another city in the Atlanta metro that would match either of the TC's big two, and the Atlanta metro only has six cities over 50,000 and none over 100,000 except Atlanta. It would have more if the Atlanta metro had the same organizational pattern as the Twin Cities, which has 15 cities in its metro over 50,000.

The Census bureau has nothing to do with it. Metropolitan areas, their divisions and all that's in between is determined by the Office of Management and Budget within the White House.
