Last week I read U.S. News and World Report's 2013 rankings of the top high schools in the U.S. and couldn't help but notice North Gwinnett High School (NGHS) was not ranked amongst the top Georgia high schools. While Peachtree Ridge High ranked at # 11 in the state, North Gwinnett (including Lanier H.S. and Mill Creek) showed an 'unranked' status. What is unclear about the unranking is whether NGHS did not participate in the rankings altogether or did not perform well enough to be ranked. I checked the NGHS website and googled for more information on this subject, but found nothing. There were absolutely no articles written on the subject as if no one else is interested to know why. Is anyone else just as perplexed by this year's findings? Is there another explanation that addresses why NGHS went from ranking above Peachtree Ridge High in past years rankings to completely falling off the radar? We just moved from the Peachtree Ridge High Cluster into the North Gwinnett High Cluster and were a tad bit concerned.

That list is kind of nuts. The methodology heavily favors schools with lots of minority students who take AP or IB classes. Don't give it another thought.

The high schools in the state with the highest SAT scores didn't make the list.

The North Gwinnett cluster is strong academically, I would move there if there was a reason for me. I think your choice to live is fine.

Rankings mean only so much and they do matter some when you are completely unfamiliar with an area and US News is a national magazine. Personally, I don't give them much credit for their college and university rankings either.

Hey Guys, thanks for your responses. I am totally familiar w/ Rankings and the politics that are oftentimes behind them. I just thought it strange that North Gwinnett High (which is a highly regarded school) was unranked. I don't have high schoolers so I wasn't sure if I was missing something. I became more perplexed when I discovered no one else was talking about this- especially when we all know people who care about where they're sending their children to school pay attention to schools' reputation, performance and rankings.

No. People who really understand education understand the nuances of the various rankings and how many are really total BS.

Yes, but you've got to evaluate each source to know how/why they rank the way they do. I dont want to be dismissive simply b/c the results aren't what I want them to be. Thanks for your input.
