Hello everyone,

I coach high school basketball in Toronto, Canada and I have a 15 year old who is moving to Atlanta at the end of summer. He is a 6 foot 7 centre who has a 7 foot plus father and a tall mother. He averaged 18 points, 15 rebounds and 4 blocks per game in 2013.

I am looking for a high school which has strong academics and a strong basketball program somewhere in Atlanta. Any advice on which schools I should contact. Any school in the Atlanta area fine. travel time is a non factor.

There are literally Hundreds of High School in the Atlanta metro area.

Since you have read 'Moving' to Atlanta Thread. You must know that Traffic in area is heavy. Relationship to where the parent will be working is important, Also how much they can afford to rent/buy for.

Also you should check out the Eligibility Rules for transfer athletic player into Georgia.

GHSA Eligibility Seminar - Session 2 - Transfer Eligibility Rules | GHSA.net

Footnote: Schools here start in Early/Mid August.

Toronto has worse commute times then Los Angeles and new york, My 8 mile drive takes me 45 minutes so travel time is not a big deal as we are accustomed to worse. As for housing costs the average house in Toronto is 450,000 and that is for a 1600 sq ft home. My 550 sqft condo has a market value of $310,000 and when I was renting my condo out I was charging 1350 a month for my small condo, therefore housing costs are not an issue either as your housing is very cheap in relation to what we pay here in Toronto. We are looking for the best opportunity available in the city of Atlanta for this young man. All he wants to know is what school has the best mix of basketball and academics in the Atlanta area.

Thank you for the information given above it is appreciated.

As someone else said, study GHSA eligibility rules.

Norcross High and Milton (though the coach got fired for allegedly recruiting) are perennial powerhouses in basketball. There are lots of others.

I am guessing long term goal is basketball scholarship? If so, and basketball is the only reason they are moving, they might consider other cities in states with perennial strong college programs. North Carolina immediately comes to mind as does Kentucky.

the family is moving for other reasons. Basketball is not why they are moving. I just want to place him in a good situation as he is a great kid and has a wonderful family. I just want this young man set up for success

High School Sports - MaxPreps

This website seems to have all kinds of info on high school sports. Including a school search, and looking at the school's national and state ranking etc. Some info is for members only. I believe the basketball team to look into is the "Varsity" team.

Has anyone else ever seen this website, and know how useful the info is?

+1 to yankeegirl73. If this is for school year 2013-2014, though, the admissions process has already concluded. The family would need to contact the school regarding a late application. Marist is an athletic powerhouse, winning the Georgia Athletic Director's Association Director's Cup every year since its inception;

A call from you, the coach, to Marist would be good, mentioning his character, b-ball talent, and smarts. If he is at all ready for their academics, they will take him in a second.
