Hi, My question is simply this... I work for a place that has quite a large fleet of trucks. I have about 5 trucks that are to old to run or we just don't use them anymore what kind of problems... fines and ect. would I be looking @ if I just chose not to renew the tags this year? I was told that I didn't have to pay the extra $20.00 to get the new decal because that is the actual price of the renewal, the other costs are just taxes. I was told as long as the vehicle is titled in your name the taxes are expected to be paid by you. What if I just don't want to pay and take my chances that they won't catch me what am I looking at as far as if I get caught????

If you aren't driving the trucks, then you don't need a tag. If you don't need a tag, then no ad valorem needs to be paid. The tag fee is $20, the ad valorem is a tax based on worth, and your trucks may be worth zero.

If you drive the trucks with no tag and get caught, you will be in big trouble. Better to pay the $20.

I was told if the vehicles are being drove or not the state of Ga still wants their cut, so I know that if you own the vehicles you must pay the taxes on the vehicle. Getting the actual sticker which is what is only $20 is not the point. We never plan to drive these vehicles again, although selling them is not feasible at this point. I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to get around the tax paying part. To my way of thinking donating these vehicles or selling them is the only way to get out of paying the taxes. Although, my boss swears there must be some sort of loop hole she can squeese through.

if you do not renew the current registration- theres no penalty. And as long as the vehicle(s) are not driven on public roads/highways- theres no problem (assuming of course that these vehicles are bought and paid for). If you sale the vehicles the registration can go with them or you can keep and destroy. Better to keep and destroy- if something should happen after the sale, they wouldn't come looking for you.

You may have some code issues depending on where the vehicles are parked. In our city, a vehicle parked within view of a street must be properly tagged. No problem with not renewing tags/paying ad valorem tax as long as the vehicles don't hit the highway. Sounds like a donation and tax write-off may be in order.

I am 69 and my husband is 73, we just moved to Ga and found out our tag was gonna be over 800.00. Is there any way to make this in 2 payments or does it all have to be up front? We do not have this kind of money.

You can pay half up front and the other half over the course of the next 12 months.

I realize this is on old thread, but FYI for anybody else that should come along asking the same question:

I think you have to report the vehicles as "inoperable" or "not in use" or something like that, and they suspend the registration. This is what I had to do earlier this year when my car was wrecked and totaled out, and I was shopping for a new one. When I bought a new car, I got a new registration. But in most cases, you'd just transfer it from one car to the other (since registrations are officially attached to the OWNER of the vehicle and not the vehicle itself).

Make any sense?
