I moved to Atlanta almost a year ago from Mobile,AL to be close to my boyfriend..
I am unable to drive because of my disability so I'm not able to commute to social places often.
I've become somewhat depressed staying in the apartment all day and sleeping the day away
I'm nervous about taking the bus because I still don't know the area to well. How do I get over this hump in my life.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
-Kim

Learn the area. Then explore.

I would start by taking classes at local gym like Zumba. It would give you a chance to get out of the apartment and interact with people in safe social setting.

There seem to be an awul lot of threads about people having trouble making friends in Atlanta.

I'd like to know, does every city's forum have similar threads, or do people have a harder time in Atlanta than other places?

Your boyfriend or whomever you live with are not doing you favors by driving you around. On weekends, instead of getting into the car. Plan an outing where they take the bus with you and get in some practice getting out and about with someone that is with you.

Also make sure when you are out thtat you take the lead and make the decisions when and where. You won't learn as much if you just follow them.

When you first start off on your own. make sure you have a charged cell phone with you and go on in the daylight only.

You will be fine.

Well that all depends on various factors. Some cities are very inviting to new people. Some cities have people who are only inviting when they can take advatage of the new resident. Again I say it could take many factors.

Agreed many factors. People seem apprehensive but it may be in their head. Also depends on what area of the city she living in.

Per your recent comment, you are in the Marietta area, and the CRT bus system out there is basic, and there is no rail service. It sounds like your disability keeps you from driving at all, so, it might be advantageous to you to live near rail service so as to be able to get around more efficiently than by bus.

You did not say why you all picked Marietta to live, as in, is it very convenient to where your boyfriend works, or just where you happened to settle? If for instance, you two don't HAVE to live in Marietta, then you could perhaps live a bit more to the East in the Perimeter North area, Dunwoody, Brookhaven, etc, which has a handful of MARTA rail stations servicing them, as well as nearby apartments, etc. If by chance you could find and afford a place within walking distance to one of the rail stations that would make it much easier for you to get around a much larger area of Atlanta to go do things. The MARTA site is MARTA - Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority and under "Schedules and Maps" at the top you'll find basic as well as more detailed interactive maps of the system to study. Maybe an apartment location service can help you two find a place closer to one of the stations, if again, you do not have to be specifically in Marietta.

meetup.com is a site that many in these forums use to find groups that share interests, where you can find groups local to you possibly, as well.
