The Bosphorus strait (which links the Black Sea to the Mediterranean) splits the city (and the continents). Turkey is the world's 15th largest economy and Istanbul is surprisingly modern and progressive, considering it dates to 600 BC. Tourism is huge there, especially since Turkey joined the EU. Though predominantly Muslim, Turkey is remarkably stable politically and fully embraces western culture. The quality of life is very high for that region of the world. Istanbul has always been the gateway between Europe and the Middle East, so in that respect a major airport makes sense. Also, it's shocking how many airlines and cities are served out of Istanbul. It's already the 6th busiest airport in Europe, after Heathrow, de Gaulle, Frankfort, Amsterdam and Madrid.

Um, sorry to nitpick, but Turkey is not in the EU. No where even close to joining. That being said, Istanbul is in a very strategic location and also accounts for about a quarter of Turkey's GDP.

220mph High Speed rail would put Charlotte within 2 hours of Atlanta, Washington D.C. within 4.5, Chicago right at 5, and Miami in 4.5, much faster than driving, and with the exception of Charlotte, on the outer edge of competitive with flight times to each of the cities.

I say we just keep saying we are the busiest airport in the world. I seriously doubt that anybody is going all the way to Turkey to prove us wrong and who cares what they say anyway?

So basically, my question to you is why would you ask such a question given your propensity to boast about how your are an "expert" on transit? Why would Georgia need to build a "network" of high speed lines to nowhere (no offense Augusta, Savannah, Macon)? Basically you are just being off topic.
With 220mph it would take 4hrs to Washington DC , Miami , and 6hrs to Chicago....but hey this is the South....you rather invest in Air and roads then the Future....and Subsidized fatty foods....

Everyone who flies India-Europe (India-Dubai-Europe), or India-US (India-Dubai-Europe-US) on Emirates Airline flies through Dubai.

Such kind of international traffic is probably part of the equation.
