I think this should be a statewide law

On May 1, 1982, the city unanimously passed a law requiring “every head of household to maintain a firearm together with ammunition.” After passage of the law, the burglary rate in Kennesaw declined and even today, the City has the lowest crime rate in Cobb County.

You would think so - this is the dominant train of thought amongst TeaPublicans. Check out what the Michigan GOP was trying to pass in yesterdays session (guns in every classroom, etc.) :

No, the ordinance itself is not a joke. Look it up here: Municode
Go to Section 34, Article II.

Wouldn't change anything in my parent's house. My dad and mom both have guns with ammunition incase of a burglar. Also, they are both liberals so it's not just a "Teapublican" thing.

I do think that more households should carry guns, but that's the limit. We should not have guns in places like schools, etc.

I think guns in schools and even university campuses will bring these shoot'em-ups to an end.

I hope all these fly-by-night advocates of mandating guns realize that the tragedy that happened in Connecticut was done by the killer's mother's REGISTERED guns. They weren't even illegally purchased guns. You want to give the 97 year old couple registered guns? What? ???

Yes, let's give hormonal college kids access to guns and beer. That isn't asking for trouble at all. It's not like the frontal lobe hasn't fully developed by age 21 right? Take a look at the age of mass killers will you? And if you didn't undertand what I meant by frontal lobe development, then I rest my case.

I haven't read up on any studies on how gun laws affect crime in the local area, but I can't imagine it'll do any good. Guns promote violence. Those who own firearms are far more likely to commit crime.

Tony, just because something worked for a single area in Cobb county does not mean it'll work for the rest of the state. Please brush up on socioeconomic differences between Atlanta and McIntyre.

It's not really a political thing. Conservaties are usually against mandating ANYTHING on anyone. They're for free-market small government deals. This mandate is actually more along the lines of liberal thought.

The only response I can come up to the Michigan law is this:

Stunning.

The question I have is this: how was the son able to get access to the mother's guns? Shouldn't they have been kept in a locked cabinet or closet?

Maybe she trusted her son, which might be understandable, so it's possible they were locked and he had access to the key, but if the guns were not locked up then much of the fault lies with the person who didn't safeguard her dangerous equipment.

I really don't have a problem with that Michigan legislation either.
