I moved here with a job offer from MA back in 1994, and now I can't imagine going back to months of below-freezing weather. I do miss my family, and I'm a bit disappointed that most of them hardly ever visit me here, but I travel there as much as I can.

Definitely, come on down and check things out. You can make friends anywhere, and Atlanta people are very friendly in general. If it's a great career opportunity and you have no kids, now might be the perfect time to try something new. I suspect the cost of living is a lot lower here, so your standard of living should be good. You can always move back if you don't like it though.

I spent some time growing up (Age 8 to Age 13) in northern VA. Springfield and Burke in Fairfax Co. I spent a couple years living in Roswell, GA and working in Cumming.

Where in Cumming will you work? Cumming is in Forsyth county, almost an hour (45 min really) outside of the city of Atlanta. Extremely suburban. It will be like a step back in time (maybe 20 years) in terms of development and a slower pace of life.

There is less to see, and you will find less to do compared to the Chesapeake trips/trots on the Mall/social & political events that pervade life in the DC area. You will be too far outside Atlanta to make frequent travel there convenient.

Whether it is a good move depends on what you're looking for out of life. Do you plan to start a family? Are you alright with experiencing a slightly more rural standard of living and having to drive absolutely everywhere?

Unfortunately, living in the city proper will not be an option for you due to the distance and traffic. Cumming is not a bad place, but it will be very vanilla compared to the area you are coming from.

I am in my early 30's, no kids, have a wife who is willing to move with me. I am not sure if it will be the best decision to leave the comfort level of living. How different would Atlanta be, what kind of challenges will it bring. I am completely confused when it comes to making this decision, it seems like everything is happening way to fast. I have tried consulting a few, but they say that the best advice should come from me myself and no one else. Would you recommend that I fly there and see how things are. Would you guys would have taken this step? I am open to any advice from you guys.
Well...we don't know a whole lot about you and what you want in life and what are your expectations.

And you are asking if you should fly here to see how things are? Seriously?

If you will be working in the city of Atlanta DO NOT CHECK OUT ALPHARETTA OR JOHNS CREEK!!!!! I have worked in downtown Atlanta for 9 years and lived all over the metro area. I now live in town 6 miles from my office. Alpharetta/ Johns Creek is BY FAR the worst commute in this city. It will make you hate your life. Takes about an hour and a half to get to work and that is if you leave before 6:30am. Usually takes that long or longer to get home. That commute is a hell on earth. Anywhere south or west of the city that same distance will cut your commute time almost in half because nobody lives in those areas compared to the overpopulated north side.

However, if you don't have children I highly recommend living inside the city of Atlanta. It's a lot more fun than any of the burbs.

I did NOVA > ATL 3 months ago and I miss NOVA. But I'm also 24 and I personally prefer the hustle and bustle/density of DC
