Atlanta's tech sector generated $113.1 billion in revenue, and nearly 30,000 jobs, or 4.6 percent of all jobs. The industry grew at a nearly 10 percent, according to the report from JLL, a commercial real estate brokerage.

North Fulton has been successful in luring call centers and other back office and IT operations, while Midtown has become the hub for the creative digital media.

Buckhead is also drawing early stage tech companies, who are scaling their workforce. Such companies need to draw Gen Y employees from Atlanta’s in-town neighborhoods, and more seasoned management who typically live in the northern suburbs.

Great news. Atlanta's economy is moving in the right direction, much like the nation. We are becoming less dependent on construction jobs and getting a more diverse economy.

That is great news. Everyone keeps saying that Atlanta is way behind and there is nothing hi-tech about it.

We're right in there with cities like LA, Chicago and Washington, DC.

The problem with these rankings from an engineer's perspective is that job options take a big drop after the first 2 or 3 areas on the list. There are probably more tech jobs in Silicon Valley than in the next 10 areas on the list, combined.

Whenever I see rankings that list Atlanta (or Georgia) in the top 10 of anything, I always point out that as the 9th largest state and metro we're EXACTLY where we should be. If we were in the top 5 THAT would be something. Don't know if the same applies here, but it's always smart to look at these rankings from that standpoint. Does it really mean anything or just state the obvious?

I don't think the top 10 consists of the top 10 largest cities though.... didn't see list, could be wrong. I just don't see LA, Philly, etc. in top 10. I imagine its SF, Austin, Boston, Atlanta, Denver....

The study is by a locally based commercial real estate firm and the metric they are using is how much office space in an area is being used by "high tech" companies.

This article is probably more useful if you are looking to relocate for a high tech job:
