My sister lives in Seattle and just moved out of the country. She is sending her car to me as a gift. She is the 2nd owner of the car and she got it as a gift also. I live in Gwinnett county.
Question: when I go and register the car, can I claim the sale price as $0 and thus do not pay the sales tax? What kind of implication does this have on my 2007 tax return?

Thanks
DC

I don't know, but for what it's worth, the only "gift" car I ever got was from a lawyer/pseudo-relative and the "sales agreement" said he sold it to me for $5. I forget what was the reasoning for this. Will be interested to hear from someone who knows.

I wasn't given a gift car per say, we just changed the title of one of my family cars from my brother's name to my husband. We put in a sales price of $1 I think because we were told at the tag office that you weren't supposed to put in 0. Maybe if you call the tag office local to you they can tell you if you are able to fill out paperwork to change the name on a title without a price?
