My wife is most likely going to do a job transfer at her current company down to the Roswell area. I'm in IT (software development) and when doing searching at the various job sites, get a lot of hits in the Roswell and Alpharetta area. Is the IT job market as robust as it seems from the search results? I really don't want to commute to atlanta itself, so finding something in Ros/Alpha is key.

I don't have a hard date yet on when the move is going to happen, so I haven't started sending resumes or anything, so I can't really judge it from that angle yet.

thanks

Hi, Siropa - I'll be searching for a job around Roswell/Alpharetta in the coming weeks myself. (Softer skillset - EMR support/Crystal Reports writing.) There do seem to be a lot of jobs - but I'm worried about the competition in the area, especially with such good universities in the area. I've found the hireINSIDER section of Career Builder to be a, meh, decent enough benchmark to see the competition for jobs I've applied for - it shows how many other applicants applied for the position, as well as their education, current salary, and salary requirements. Have you found something similar with Dice or the other IT job sites?

(and, ugh, isn't it frustrating to sit and wait to start your job search!!)

Best of luck - I hope your wife gets the final word soon!

henbob6, yeah it is frustrating to not be able to start yet. I've literally seen several dozen postings over the last few weeks that would be a perfect fit. oh well.

I haven't looked at any of the data that shows other applicants. Great idea about finding that kind of data. Though given how many places the same job gets posted, I wonder how accurate the data will be from one site.

Yup, I've seen a few good fits in just a few days myself!

Since I've been job searching here in NV, I'll be able to use the data set to generally trend the GA applicant pool against NV - say, an increase in the # of people with Masters degrees. Yup, it's flawed data - but I'm more comfortable having SOME numbers than none!

Really depends on your skill set, if you have the right skills, it'll be easy. Roswell, not so much but Alpharetta/Norcross have a huge IT sector. Not being cocky b/c two years I couldn't say this, but I could walk out of my job tomorrow and find a job pretty easily. .NET C# Oracle developer. We can't find an Oracle DBA right now b/c competition is huge and the pool is small and our office is downtown and like the O.P. people don't want to commute downtown.

Thanks for your opinion. I've got a pretty diverse background with both java and .net experience (along with lots of other stuff).

i'm probably worrying about nothing, but doing the relocation isn't a minor undertaking with just the moving part, much less fretting about job prospects.

Also, check out Perimeter (Dunwoody/Sandy Springs). Lots of jobs here, including many in IT.

No, you are right to think about jobs early in the process. It's a little better for IT, but for the most part, the job market in Atlanta still sucks. I very strongly recommend having a job here before you move.
