According to the AJC

High achievers admitted to Georgia Tech *| ajc.com

Georgia Tech had 14,700 applicants and only 2,700 were accepted. Average SAT 1430. They list GPA at 3.9 but high school GPA's don't seem as relevant these days.

I'm guessing that a large portion of the high SAT scorers won't attend because GT's average SAT last year was 1354. I don't think it would jump almost 80 points.

The state has pressured GT to accept more Georgians but makes me wonder if GT will try to buy its way out and go private.

My GS plans to apply. He's from out of state, so I hope that helps.

If you complete a two year engineering degree at GSU, with a 2.7 and you are georgia resident they will accept you. This makes GPC a no brainer for anyone who really wants to get into Tech.

Maybe if he's paying his own way as the state has been cutting back on its support. I think they have a formula so it might depend on how the numbers crunch.

I think that's true of Southern Polytechnic too.

Regents Engineering Transfer Program (RETP) | Admission

Sorry, I mean GPC, I said GSU in the first sentence. I didnt know about Southern Poly, but GPC is cheaper and probably more convenient for the average person not living in Cobb. Also, if you are going to Southern Poly, I believe they have 4 year engineering program, correct?

Not a UGA grad or fan, but these statistics make an engineering college at UGA seem like a good idea...for the in state kids who can't quite get into Tech, or those who simply don't want to go there. Why does GT oppose that so much? Many states have more that one university with a good engineering program.

Hmm, they really must have raised the stakes in the last 10 years, I got in in 2002 with a 1270 SAT, I did have a 4.0 GPA though.

You are right, GT is still a backup school for many students who want to get into MIT, Stanford and Cal Tech. I believe your numbers are incorrect though. More than 2,700 were accepted. I believe about 5,000 to 5,500 were accepted knowing that about half will decide to go elsewhere. GT typically has about a 50% acceptance rate.

GT could've expanded their programs and accepted many more qualified students, but the Board of Regents decided to create new engineering programs at UGA instead. GT could've easily developed a plan to accept 500 more students a year to expand their programs at minimal cost. Instead, the BOR decided to start a program from scratch that has no reputation of excellence. Horrible, horrible decision. Does the state want more great engineers, or just more engineers?

You're right. I goofed. It's 2,400 freshman spots to fill from a pool of 14,700 applicants with 250 spots for summer. GT will accept many more not expecting them to show up. A place like Harvard probably sees almost everyone accepted enroll.
