my fiance and i arrived on friday night and looked at probably 10 apartment complexes on saturday. i kind of have my heart set on decatur (until his family tried swaying us away from it and showed me the crime maps O_O), i really liked jackson square apartments (he liked woodland hills). i tried not to look at any reviews because i assume most are fake/just bitter people, but i couldn't help myself and i'm worried about all the comments talking about break ins. i thought being in a gated community would make me feel more safe but i'm just not sure anymore.

we came from austin (which is an insanely safe city) and i'm trying not to let myself get freaked out about the crime that tends to go on in a lot of the city, but i'm a young female who needs to sometimes walk her dog at night and i don't want to feel like i'm going to be mugged/come home to an empty apartment.

i don't really know what i'm asking here, i guess if anyone has any first hand experiences with great apartments in decatur that are less than $1000/mo or just reassuring me that decatur (specifically 30030 & 30033) aren't too bad and i should stop stressing.

I agree with not looking at the reviews as like you said a lt of them are going to be biased, BUT this is a major city and there is going to be crime here. Its not the suburbs where not a lot happens. Look foro the extra security measures the apartments offer. Pretty much every place is gated, and those gates are very very easy to get around. So look for - security guard that patrols, double bolt locks, and security systems in the apartments. If you have those thieves are going to look for easier places to break in before yours. Also the number one crime in Atlanta is car breakins and not apartment breakins. The simple solution, dont leave anything visible in your car worth taking- and that includes change in the cupholder. Once again thieves are going to look for cars to break in that they are guaranteed to get stuff. You have no idea how many times our apartment complex had a car break in because the moron left their laptop bag in the back seat.

Have you tried promove? I used them when I first moved to the area.

Promove is good for a starting point and will help you get an idea of what's available but I would definitely search online for apartments in the area and then visit whenever possible. I used promove but actually found some nice apartments online that were not included in my profile.

I agree about using Promove. I unfortunately, was a bit in a hurry to find a place and took their advice. I would use them as a starting point but would certainly shop around on your own. I don't feel extremely safe which my choice, but I have had no personal issues in my complex. I did notice the other day when I took my dog out that one of the girls left her purse right in the front seat of her car. Really???? Use common sense! I hope your search leads you to a place you feel safe in. Good luck.

I've been at woodland hills (30033) for the past 6 months. It's been good so far. Never had a problem with crime or anything. My only complaint is the insects are more numerous than some other areas, but being in a more wooded area that is to be expected.
