Hello! We currently live in the Emory area and my husband is considering taking a job in the Suwannee area. Does anyone know what the commute time is like going up 85 north in the mornings (and 85 south in the evenings)? Is this a reverse commute? He would be driving from the Clairmont Rd Exit on 85 up to Exit 109-Old Peachtree.

The expressway part will be easy most of the time. The main issue is exactly how close to I-85 you live. Going from I-85 all the way to Emory itself is dreadful in the afternoon as well as in the morning.

I have a friend who commutes to Suwanee. He gets on 85 at North Druid Hills Road and says he allows about an hour to an hour and fifteen.

That's what he tells me. Maybe he's counting the time it takes him to get to the expressway and how far he has to go after he gets off.

I used to do the drive from Clairmont/85 up to the exit right before Old Peachtree (Sugarloaf Pkwy). In the morning, it usually took about 30-35 minutes door to door (my office was right around the corner from the exit). In the evening, it could take anywhere from 30-45+ minutes. 85 southbound in the evening can get very busy/congested, but still moves at a decent clip - especially compared to what you see going northbound.

Thanks for all of the responses. Sounds like they are quite varied.

To johnatl - How long ago did you drive this commute? I noticed you said that you used to do this drive. 30-45 mins is not bad to me. It's the hour, hour and fifteen that's not too desirable.

Thanks!

As recently as June of 2009. The construction at 316 and the related new access roads/ramps had been completed just a couple of months before.

If the office is pretty close to the Old Peachtree exit, it should be very similar to my experience. My office was actually only about 1/2 mile from the Old Peachtree exit, it was just a little closer to Sugarloaf (on Brown Rd.)

True; you're not exactly 'home free' when you exit I-85 for Emory. Traffic around the campus and surrounding surface streets can be pretty daunting at peak hours.
