Ive always thought of Atlantians as flashy people. Given the types of cars I see people driving and the clothes they wear.

There is certainly a lot more flaunting of wealth here than I remember seeing in the midwest.

I sort of agree. There are a lot of $30,000 millionaires in this city and you see a lot of younger people driving luxury imports. More power to them if they can make the payments on them with no worries but I don't see that as frugal. Driving a 10 year old civic when you have tons of money in the bank is frugal. That's also the crowd that hits the clubs every weekend and drops at least $20 on a cover charge and $15+ per drink at the flashiest new hangout. I don't think that's nearly as common as it was pre-recession but its still a big part of this city's culture.

Of course you have the opposite end of the spectrum here as well but I wouldn't consider Atlanta the most frugal city. In fact I'd consider the average New Yorker more frugal than the average Atlantan simply because they HAVE to be. Jack's $.99 store was always a madhouse. I saw plenty of folks come out of the upscale shops of 5th Ave with armfuls of bags who jumped on the bus(and I'm pretty sure these weren't tourists by the accent).

You are absolutely correct - there is a sizable superficial set of people in this town who need to project faux wealth. The luxury imports look very nice however part of the equation in places such as Atlanta is the CHEAP rental prices and costs of the one bedroom apartments these same people reside in ....

You must be running with the wrong crowd!

I guess it's a matter of perception. It has always seemed to me that Atlantans tend to be rather subdued and that flashiness is considered gauche.

We may be looking at different people. I see lots of folks out walking, biking, jogging and generally bustling around all over town.

More than I remember seeing in the northeast too, where many more people were really more wealthy. There does seem to be more flash here and people trying to "keep up with the Joneses" than in other areas. Maybe they're cutting coupons and doing other things to offset the huge car payment or mortgage.
