what baffles me is her restoration of the robe was quite good. I find it hard to believe the the defacing was was not intentional. If she did the robe, she would have not done such an amateur job on the face. Just my opinion.

Damn' I must have been half asleep. You are quite right. All she needed to do was just tidy up what was there - to make such an Edvard Munch of it I can only think that she first tried to clean the face up by scrubbing and it all came off so she had no guide - or it was deliberate defacement as you say. Btw. Congrats on being made Moderator.
Since we can't explain the occurrence 100%, that is as good an explanation...and damn' - that face does does look a bit alien -like, well it isn't human. Could they be trying tell us something? They SAW the old dear doing it? well....perhaps the aliens messed with her mind so she'd pass on this mysterious hint that aliens are real.... yeah, yeah.. Now all we need to do is find someone in a fifty mile radius who claimed to have seen a UFO and we have all the evidence anyone but a blinkered skeptic must accept.
I'd have made a great Flying saucer nut, too.
