TORONTO, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Thinking about God reduce distress, but only in believers, while atheists are more distressed after thinking of God-related ideas, Canadian researchers say.
Researchers at the University of Toronto Scarborough looked at brain activity in people primed to think about God and found decreases in activity in the anterior cingulate cortex -- an area of the brain associated with regulating bodily states of arousal when things were going wrong -- such as making mistakes.
That would be because we understand the danger of the believers forcing stupidity upon us. They have already succeeded in many school systems by forcing the teach of absurdities in lieu of science, rewriting history books because a famous American was also an Atheist, and so on and on; ad nauseam .

Clearly, thinking about homosexuality stresses out more than a few heterosexuals.
Thinking about Islam stresses out a lot of non-Muslims.
I imagine thinking about communism and stresses out a lot of non-communists.
Inzlicht suggests atheists may have done better in the study if prompted to think about their own beliefs.
Many atheists have bad memories related to religion and, thus, God. It's no wonder thinking about that might raise stress levels a little. You're administering a test to two groups of people, one of which finds peace in the subject of the test, the other of which most likely has feelings of contempt and anger for the subject, or something closely related to the subject. And the results are pretty much as predicted.

So they got some atheist to think about ideas that they find to be ridiculous and it showed more distress in their brain patterns than believers. I'm totally shocked. This is some ground breaking stuff we're dealing with here.
How come they didn't do a reverse test? You know, get believers to think about no god and see how that affected their brain patterns when compared to atheist thinking the same thing.
It's obvious many adults need a security blanket to make it though life. No big shock there.
This sounds like one of those "scientific" studies where the output is something obvious, like "men like breasts!"
Of course thinking about a higher power distresses atheists. It goes against the moral fabric of their lives in much the same way as thinking about the possibility of there NOT being a god distresses those who believe in it.
In other words, this article should belong to the journal of "Duh."
