I am really curious about this because Asians in the US seem really liberal and tolerant of the LGBT community, especially on the west coast (SF/LA) and maybe even NYC.
Asians in the US are quite different from those living in Asia. Plus, those living in liberal places are generally more accepting of social change.
Asian societies are generally more conservative, though there has been gradual change across the area.
Most people in Asia simply don't really care about LGBT, nobody wants to intrude their bedroom and charge them with homosexuality(it's not illegal after all). But on the other hand, there's a lot of more important things to take care of, people are starving, poison food, dirty air, etc. Whether same-sex marriage should exist is of no concern for 99% of the population.
I know a lot of westerners just think of China and Japan when they think of Asia, but there are 48 countries/independently governed states in Asia, and 23 of them have laws against just being homosexual. So that means over 1 billion people in Asia could go to jail, or worse, just for being homosexual, and in many (if not most of the rest) it is typically frowned upon behavior and not well accepted. So it certainly doesn't seem to be a fair statement to say most people in Asia simply don't care about LGBT, and just plain false to say "not illegal after all".
No, few if any people consider China homophobic. Go ask any foreigner living in China. You are from Taiwan and have never been to mainland China. I have no idea where you got the bias and hatred.

I totally support the idea not to reveal too much sexual content on public TV channels.
Can we agree that the lack of hate crime shouldn't be the sole metric for judging how progressive a society is on LGBTQ issues? Legal changes like marriage and civil rights laws that prohibit discrimination are important for the non hetero normative folks to live normal and decent lives. Do ordinary people in China care enough to ask for, or even allow this kind of change in their society? I doubt it.

China does not have explicit law to protect LGBTQ people, so they "may" be discriminated in job market, for example.
However, I do not think any employer can claim they do not hire homosexual people. There are still ways to sue them.
The job market in China also has discriminations on age, gender, marital status, hometown, and so on. These are not allowed in theory but not uncommon in reality.
Generally speaking, homosexuality is not as a prominent social issue as in the US, so it attracts less attention. China also allows changing gender identity, with medical approval.

Yeah Taiwan's an ok destination for gay couples, though travelling is not really the same as living. Thailand and the Philippines are both LGBT-friendly for gay couples as holiday destinations despite the lack of LGBT legal protections.

Don't change the topic. I am saying China is not homophobic in most people's opinion. I am not saying China is super LGBT-friendly. Totally different things.
What the US is like has nothing to do with China either.

Other parts of Taiwanese laws such as prostiution, making porn videos and adultery are examples of Taiwan being more conservative unlike countries like Japan and the U.K.
Drug laws are conservative in all Asian countries, not a bad thing.

it is wrong impression that Asians in America are more liberal. they traditionally voted more democrats, but that has started to change. Asians are more for traditional family values, against open border, against welfare state, etc. they are now aligned with republican values in today's political environment.
