Amazingly clean compared to many countries in the world and safe. I recall young children traveling long distances on public transportation to get to school in the morning with no safety concerns. Homogeneous society with shared identities and culture.
I heard that their native Shinto religion may have something to do with it. It is definitely a cultural thing since their poor and rustic areas are also clean compared to their equivalent in other countries. Chinese cities may look clean but that's because they hire a ton of people to sweep and collect trash. Go to the country or the poorer parts and they're absolutely filthy.

China is improving fast with respect to cleanness. It is not ONLY because they hire lots of people.
Many places of rural China do not have enough water. Even today some people have difficulties in obtaining drinking water
They are brought up from a very young age to be tidy and orderly, its part of their culture and I wish it would rub off when I see people throw rubbish in the streets. spitting or leaving dogs dirt on pavements.. its gross unhygienic and filthy.. I like order myself be in inside or outside the house... my hubby however never closes a drawer or cupboard for some unknown reason and no amount of pulling him up fixes it, in fact I think he now does it just to annoy me. as I go round closing drawers...
