Keep in mind the Surprise numbers on City-Data are from 2002 and before, when surprise had 30,000 people. Now the town has grown to 90,000 (tripled) in just seven years. Do you know what the crime stats are now? It's interesting that they're so old, while Kingman stats are up-to-date.

Another factor is that Kingman has some older areas with tightly packed together mobile homes. Most of the crime goes on in those areas where you have fairly indigent people stealing from each other. I can assure you that the new and nicer areas of town don't have anywhere near the crime as the older areas. In fact, it's my impression that there's very little crime. In the three years I've lived here, I don't know anyone who's been a victim of any sort of crime.

Which are the nicer newer areas? and which are the ones to stay away from?

I don't know the whole town, but the area I'm in is really nice. I would call it southeast Kingman, or the Hualapai area. You get to it by taking Southern Avenue east from Eastern Ave. You'll go by several nice neighborhoods. Fripps Ranch, Southern Vista Estates, Hualapai Foothills Estates, and Rancho San Antonio. In other parts of town, Walleck Ranch is nice, and the area around the golf course is nice. There are other good areas too near where Rambush is, I'm sure he'll chime in. The two bad areas I know of are "Birdland", which has street named after birds, and the area south of the railroad tracks downtown. The huge unincorporated area of Butler has some sketchy areas as well. One look at these areas and you'll know why. They're generally old, run down trailers and cabins. Stick with the newer areas, and you'll be fine. If you have kids, I would definitely recommend the Hualapai area.

Default From an ol' Vermonter

Here's my suggestion (I moved from Springfield, VT 11/07!) Fly out in Jan even if only for a week . . . or two, that is the cold miserable time of the year up there anyways . . . rent a car, and drive around the area a bit . . . we really like where we live, even though Jan & Feb are too cold for my liking in the mornings . . . but it is a small retirement community on a golf course in the middle of no where! (Probably too long of a commute for you though . . . ) our zip is 85625 4300' elevation I rarely us ac in the house in the summers!
