Nowhere. An hour and fifteen minutes away is Vegas. You don't want that commute. Please also read the thread "AZ is a terrible place..."

Kingman isn't any worse than any other smaller city. There is an 8'000 ft+ mountain right outside town with million dollar homes and great hiking and off roading. Crime is mostly contained in a couple of areas. If you aren't in the drug culture and lock your parked car you will have few troubles. People in Mohave County want zero crime and when it isn't we scream bloody murder! Kingman is a rail and highway town so there's some transient traffic by the freeway. So don't live in that area.

The east and SE side has nice homes, roughly $350k up to a million+. Pine Lake is about 6,500 ft and a bit rustic and is about a 15-20 min drive to downtown. Don't fret about the scorpions, rattlesnakes, gila monsters, elk and giant bear! OK, there's no bears.

Welcome to Arizona, buy jeep, and a gun!

Congrats to your husband on the job offer, but I am not a fan of Kingman. It is not really near any large cities, you can reach Henderson, NV in an hour and a half which is closer than Flagstaff, AZ that is two hours away. Those who love small mountain towns seem to like it, however, it will be quite different from where you currently live.

Other than Las Vegas, and its metro area Nevada is pretty empty. Anyplace along the Colorado River that is within an hour or an hour and 15 minutes from Kingman is going to be hotter than all hell during the summer, because of its low elevation.

East of Kingman is Hackberry, Valentine and Truxton there's not much if anything there. I doubt that you could even find a home there even if you wanted to. Further east is Peach Springs which is on the Hualapai Indian Reservation. That leaves you with Seligman and Ash Fork or "Trash Fork" as people like to call it and for good reason. Arizona is pretty wide open. If you move to some of these somewhat remote places. One thing you have to take into consideration is how far you'll be from everything, hospitals, shopping, restaurants, entertainment etc.

North of Kingman there's Chloride which is an old mining town with a population of around 350 people and Dolan Springs which has a lot of trailer parks, manufactured homes and land for sale if you want to build.

If I were you I wouldn't rule Kingman out as a place to live. Its population is around 28,000. You'll be close to shopping and your everyday needs and there's a wider selection of places to live and find a nicer home. Not only that but I would think that an hour or more commute each way would get old after awhile. At about 3,300 ft. in elevation it's pretty hot during the summer but not quite as hot as those places along the Colorado River it's probably about a 10 to 15 degree difference. Just about any place that you find that's within an hour or an hour and 15 minutes from Kingman including Kingman is going to be hot, windy and dry. There's no getting around that.

You've just gotta' come out here and see for yourself. Before we moved we looked into all of those places and took everything into consideration.

Lake Havasu is about an hour away. If you're willing to commute from Vegas then Havasu could be an option. It is not a bad place, I've only spent a few weeks there while staying in town for work, but everyone I work with always said it's nicer than Kingman. More of a resort town. It is on the Colorado so I guess it will be hotter there in the summer as someone mentioned.

Hotter than all hell is more like it. Lake Havasu City was at one time at the top of our list until one of the realtors told us that you'll have to understand that you'll be in the Mojave Desert and can expect summertime temperatures approaching those of Death Valley, CA.

For about 6 months out of the year Lake Havasu City will be in the 100's. June, July and August 110/115. It's wide open and the sun beats down on everything. Kinda' like living in a sandbox with few trees except for palm trees. It had a record high of 123 degrees although that's out of the ordinary. The hottest we've ever experienced was in Wikieup when it was 113. With the sun beating down on you it feels a lot hotter than that. It feels like you're in an oven. Would you be willing to put up with 6 months of that?

Having lived in Arizona for over 10 years now. We know plenty of people who have lived under such conditions. They all said it's great if you don't mind spending 6 months out of the year in an air conditioned building and vehicle. You can get a 1st degree burn touching ordinary objects that are left out in the sun such as a vehicle's door handle or seat belt buckle. The rest of the year especially the winter it's an absolute paradise. That's what attracts people to these types of places in the first place. It did for us after putting up with the miserable winters of the northeast.

We love living in Arizona and just about every square inch of it. But there are just some places that because of the intense summer heat you may not want to deal with. Knowing what I know now, I know I wouldn't.

Unfortunately for you, if your husband takes the job your choices will be limited to Kingman and places that are within an hour's or so drive. Any place within that area you have to expect somewhat unbearably hot summer time temperatures. However Kingman because of its higher elevation may be more bearable.

Where we live the elevation is at about 5,500 ft. where the weather is just about perfect year round. Although we do get snow. Sometimes a foot or more, but not that often. Summers are in the mid 90's if you're out in the sun it feels hotter than that, in the shade a lot cooler. However because of the low humidity it's not as bad as the mid 90's in the northeast that's for sure. We're about a 2 1/2 to 3 hour's drive from Kingman.
