Thinking about moving to Payson (from Phoenix) and need to know what the job opportunities are there. I will also be looking for a house to rent that will accept a big (8 yr old) dog.. any info is appreciated :-)
I moved to Phoenix about a year ago, the summers are really just too HOT !! Besides I miss the community feel of other places I've lived. I don't really find the people all that friendly here either.
I realize I miss the fall & winter too much but all my family now lives in Phoenix so I don't want to go too far.

Arizona really has no economy outside Phoenix and Tucson. You may find service and retail jobs in Payson, but that's about it. Then there is always real estate, but I suspect that is pretty slow and over supplied with agents these days, too. Flagstaff might be a little better as they have the University and county offices there. But it's pretty darn cold there in the winter and way more expensive than Phoenix. Another possibility might be Sierra Vista where Ft Huachuca is a major employer. I think the weather there is great, but I am a long term resident and find 90 "cool".

I enjoy Payson. But job wise, well there's a Wal-Mart. Mostly the town appears to offer service oriented jobs.

Default jobs in Payson?

you'll starve in Payson unless you have good construction skills, and then you will starve when construction goes to pot. It always does! Only way to live in Payson is to bring buckets of money, and your social security check.

Funny, I lived in Payson for over 13 years and I never starved. I didn't work in construction either. Granted, I did work in the 'service industry' as a food server. I made some excellant money. At least as much as the construction people and year round too.

Anyplace we live is what we make it for ourselves. If a person really wants to work, they will. Payson has grown a LOT since I first moved there in 1982 and jobs were plentiful, even then. Before Wal Mart went in and ran all the Mom 'n Pop businesses, hardware stores, clothing stores, shoe stores, Yellow Front, Sprouse Reitz, Woolworth's etc.. out of business. There are still a few old 'diehards' there who kept their stores open. Ace Hardware being one.

Yeah, Payson isn't very big but there are jobs for those who want them. And it's really a nice place to live.

Default Payson jobs?

I just have to say that those stores you mentioned have closed everywhere! I don't like Walmart, but at least we have a place to shop now! Ace is here because they have kept up with the times. Those shops didn't have employees anyway. They were run by Mom and Pop. Most people here just make ends meet except for the rich CA's that live in the gated million dollar communities.
Housing is a serious problem here. Payson is a beautiful place, but traffic is intolerable, and there really aren't any "good" jobs here.
I don't think people are any nicer here than Px, honestly, unless you go to church to make friends.
I would have to say "NO DEAL"
