I saw that Total Transit/Discount Cab is at war with Lyft and Uber which is a Google owned app based Taxi service here in AZ.

I think that because we lack public transportation that these app based cab services are a tremendous benefit to AZ state the competition will help keep the price of cab service reasonable.

These services also provide a way for folks to make some extra money to pay the bills with very flexible hours.

Aren't they operating only in the Phoenix area? (Perhaps Tucson as well)

Uber seems to be in the majority of the east and west valley cities from the link above. They may not do pick ups in the other areas but I would be very surprised if they did not do drop offs anywhere since the longer the ride the more the driver makes.

Since their growth rate is incredible and since they have enormous money behind them I cannot but think they will be growing to cover the entire state.
They have also started doing deliveries which could lead to all kinds of other services like groceries, flowers, packages..............

Lyft is in the Phoenix area and Tucson area as well and seems to be doing well.

If there is a level playing field in terms of driver testing, security, insurance, taxes etc. I'm all for it. I'm not for it if all these costs are externalized on the public / welfare. "Because accidents will happen."

How do costs compare to taxis? American taxis are so exorbitantly expensive I can't remember the last time I rode in one. At least ten years ago. In latin america you can drive across most cities for a few bucks. Here it costs $10 to make it to the corner store one way.

I just had a discussion about this at a networking meeting this week. Apparently, if the driver of the Lyft or Uber vehicles doesn't insure themselves properly as a livery service, then the insurance company will not cover anyone in the event of an accident. And, since most livery insurance can be extremely high (the insurance agent I spoke with said coverage can be anywhere between $3500-$10,000 a year), odds are that the driver isn't properly insured..I love the concept but the insurance aspect needs to be addressed.

Quote:
Taxi and ridesharing apps Uber and Lyft have announced the expansion of their insurance coverage as the companies work to respond to issues brought to light by a fatal accident on New Year's Eve involving an Uber driver.
Both Uber and Lyft have expanded their insurance to avoid problems.
