Howdy -

I'm moving to Keams Canyon, AZ (86034) next week from Nebraska. I woud greatly appreciate any information folks would be willing to provide about the area. Esp. anything about quality of life, nearest grocery store, movie theatres, cell phone coverage for GSM & CDMA phones, crime (if any), nearest library, satellite internet reception, Gas Prices, and where to find Tai Chi partners.

Thanks to all who reply!

are you going to be teaching or working in a hospital there?....

sorry I can't offer answers, but, if you're working, does your contact there have info for you for these questions?....do you have housing already set up?....

good luck there....beautiful country....

Ganado and Tuba City, both on the Navajo Rez, and Winslow, off the rez and on an interstate (more services), may be your closest choices for city-like conveniences....Ganado is about 50 minutes away....Tuba and Winslow are about 100 minutes away....

Based on a quick Google search, I don't think you'll have much success with quality of life or Tai Chi partners. As azdr said, your best bet will probably be asking your local contact/employer for many of these details. Best wishes to you.

Thumbs up Keams Canyon

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my query folks!

I will be working at the hospital as a direct government employee. No contract agency to tap info from unfortunately. I have made inquiries of all of the staff that I have spoken to, but many of them are recent transplants to the area too. I still wish to learn everything about my new home (hopefully through the time that social security kicks in a few years from now) that I can from any Arizonans (Arizonians ?) who know the area.

Also, this plea through this venue may well be the only way I will ever find that elusive Tai Chi practitioner in the middle of the desert. (Hmmm, come to think of it...David Carradine did seem to be found walking through the desert a lot. Maybe there will be loads of barefoot monks wandering about. Heh...)

Hope Springs Eternal...as does my thanks,

Nebraska? Get ready for some serious culture shock. I lived on the rez for 13 years and my wife is Hopi. I haven't been to Keams in a long time, but I hear it's still pretty much the middle of nowhere. Other than the various agency offices, the clinic and related housing, not much. Your nearest actual towns are as stated, Ganado and Tuba City. There is a pretty good grocery store at Second Mesa, about 30 minutes away. Most crime is alcohol related stuff and bored kids. Driving at night can be iffy. It's beautiful country. BYOB if you drink. The rez is dry.
Tai Chi? I wouldn't hold my breath, although the various off-rez employee communities (IHS, schools) do come up with ways to amuse themselves so it's not impossible. You might look into broadening your horizons beyond those you work and live with. Living with and socializing with the same people can be pretty stifling after a while. Good luck.
