My usual spot in the white mountains is closed right now and we need to find an alternative. I would like to go to a place out of the heat that is not crowded. I'm looking for a campsite on the water so I can do some fishing. I am flexable as to the location since I usually drive 5 hours to my spot.

Please help
Thanks.

The state has closed most camp grounds right now due to extreme fire danger.

Not all campgrounds are closed, but pretty much everything in the White Mountains is. Here is a list of Coronado National Forest campsites that are open:

Coronado National Forest - Campground Guide

You probably wont find anything in that list close to fishing. Since you are willing to travel up to 5 hours, you may want to consider the eastern extent of the Gila National Forest. It looks like everything east of NM-32 and NM-12 is open. See:

Gila campground list with status:

Good luck! It's hard not to want to go camping right now. It will be nice when the monsoon kicks in.

Try along Canyon Creek on the Tonto, if you like stream fishing. The upper Canyon is fly fish only, though, and I think disbursed camping is more regulated in that area. Perhaps there are some Rim lakes that are less used?

Or stay home and out of the woods until the rains get going, become part of the solution instead of part of the problem should a fire break out in the area your camping in.

Campgrounds in Coconino National Forest are still open. Fire restrictions are however in effect. The restrictions prohibit fires, campfires, charcoal, coal and wood stoves and limit smoking to within enclosed vehicles or buildings. Pressurized liquid or gas stoves, lanterns, and heaters meeting safety specifications will continue to be allowed.

I had called the Mogollon Rim Ranger District this morning. I was told the restriction is in effect for all campgrounds in the Forest. With the fire burning in the east, reprimands will be severe if caught burning outside of the restriction.

The Coconino Forest is now offically CLOSED to ALL FIRES and Smoking. FS says they will be handing out fines that "could" reach $5,000.
