I'm considering purchasing a house, but it has a unique look. Please help me identify what style of architecture this is. I'm thinking Colonial, but I'm barely a novice. Also, I'm not a fan of the monochrome look, so any ideas on how to dress up the exterior would be greatly appreciated.

That house style is called "Dutch Colonial." Often the roof is done in a contrasting color such as medium-dark gray. We live in a very similar house to the one you pictured. It has a nice lay-out.

My vote is for Cape Cod.

I like the real wood door on this house & I would add shutters for sure.

Little Dolphin is right.

It's not a Cape Cod house. Cape Cod's have a very distinct gable roof - it's also very symmetrical in its placement of windows around its door frame. The roof in the OP's post is a Gambrel and is very distinct within the Dutch Colonial/Dutch Colonial Revival style, not Cape Cod.

That looks like a mansard roof (but could be cape cod). It's definitely not gambrel. Dutch colonial architecture used a modified gambrel roofline.
Need side view of house to confirm.

^Agree. Definitely need a side view of the house to know for sure, but it doesn't look like a gambrel roofline to me at all.

My first thought was Dutch Colonial but I need to see a side view to be sure.
As for changing it up. I would definitly paint the door area a different, contrasting color. Almost any color si contrasting to white, so take your favorite color and paint the door area. Not just the door. Paint the windows and door. You can paint the windows and door frame one color and the door a different lighter color. If the upper windows are dormers, consider painting them a contrasting color. Maybe the same as the door area, it doesn't have to be the same. I would also put shutters on the lower windows. The color of them can be the same as the door or a complementaery color.
Get one of the proframs that paint companies offer and play with colors. Those programs will allow you to play with colors to come up with what you like.
Let us know the outcome. It's a pretty house and I bet it will shine with some color touches.

Yep looks to be a mansard and depending on what part of the country that flat roof my be a problem with a lot of rain.

I'll vote 70s mansard with a couple of the others. Also it appears to be brick with corner quions. If anything it would be slightly victorian.

When its time to reroof, I would select an roof that has color to it instead of off-white. That a paint job and some carefully added detail could do wonders. Think of it as a blank slate.
