We did exactly that but we are from Wy so driving great distances are quite common. Alaska is great and we seen a heck of alot of it by day tripping out of Anchorage. We took the train out of Anchorage which was cool but other than that plan on staying OUT of Anchorage. We seen a great deal of wildlife while there and it was a great trip. I didn't understand the appeal of fishing shoulder to shoulder like they did in Anchorage and when we go again would be more site specific instead of day tripping. We went in July or Aug and definitely well worth the trip. Majority of Alaska is great.

As far as where to stay in Anchorage, it all sucks pretty much the same. There's not much Alaska about it, it's just like any other city. I have been taking alternate routes through Anchorage each morning looking for a better burrito, and no matter which side road I take, I see the Homeless sleeping on the sidewalks, under RV's, in make shift Shanties. It's very sad, and not the Alaska you want in your head.
Denali is about 5 or 8 hours from Anchorage not depending on the weather but on repair work on the highway. The latest earthquake damaged the highway towards Denali. I couldn't believe it. The state is repairing but traffic is delaying a lot.
Welcome to western world paradise with Homeless people in cities. I haven't seen this in another part of the world.
Homeless business is Democrat's kickback to pockets from budgets. Democrats business to make them self rich.........................................disgu sting !!!!
Last month Anchorage city gain $ 700 000.00 on alcohol taxes. Where is the money ???
Only Democrats-controlled cities and states have huge homeless people. Why not Republican-controlled states.
PRECIPICE is coming !!!!

I just clicked on Apple Maps from Target near Lake Campbell to Denali is 4 hrs and 8 mins. I do realize it’s 5:45 am when doing this. Construction isn’t going to add 4 hrs. When I lived in Hillside my buddy and I drove to Denali and back and it wasn’t a 10 hr affair.

Matanuska glacier is worth driving to. Can’t really go wrong with the Kenai Peninsula, the tunnel to Whittier is worth doing. Alyeska ski resort is open weekends in May until the 23rd. I think staying in Seward and or Homer would be a much better idea then back and forth from Anchorage. The Harding icefield near Seward is an not too hard hike depending on snow/trail conditions via snow.

Anchorage to Denali Park entrance is a little over 4 hours one way. I've made that drive a bunch of times. I wouldn't do it as a day trip however, as all you will have time for is watching the trees go by on the Parks highway.

If you make it to Talkeetna, and you can afford it, do a flight seeing tour of Denali. It is simply spectacular. Nothing compares to it in the lower 48. Pay the extra for a landing on the Ruth or Kahiltna glaciers. Getting out of the plane and being able to stand there and look around is just amazing.
