Hey everyone,

My boyfriend and I are from northern Minnesota. We are thinking of taking a trip to Anchorage in late May and get a feel for the town to see if we want to move there. We most likely will be driving. What are your thoughts on this? It's about a 3,100 mile drive. I've heard the roads are pretty dangerous-will they still be in May?

What are your thoughts about living in Anchorage? Temperature, daylight, outdoor activities, jobs etc. Also, is there good hunting and fishing?

Thank you for your responses! It's much appreciated!

You're from Minnesota. The roads in May won't even make you blink.

I guess Anchorage is probably a good place to hunt the most dangerous game.

If you look on www.alaska.gov, you may find some of the information you need about hunting and fishing, cost of licenses etc. I have lived here since October of 2009. So, I have been here for 2 winters. They haven't been bad. Some days we were warmer than some of the states in the lower 48. We only got down to about 5 1/2 hours of daylight during the winter. Driving can be difficult if you aren't use to driving on snow and ice, but being from Minnesota, I'm sure you have had the experience. There is a lot of hiking trails that are very close to Anchorage. Some of the trails are used by cross country skiers. There are a few ski slopes close too. You won't have any problem finding something to do. There are some of the same stores and restaurants you could find in the lower 48. Jobs....well you can check again on www.alaska.gov and click on a link for jobs in Alaska. They are mostly state jobs. What type of jobs are you looking at?

I wouldn't visit or relocate until we're sure where the Japanese radiation is going and how strong it will be.

The last time I drove the highway it was early June. The roads were not bad. I am guessing road conditions would not be much different in late May. The one thing you will encounter is all of the road construction repairing the winter damage to the roads. Expect several delays while you wait for a pilot car to lead you thru the construction zones.

I drove from Tampa in late May/early June last year. The roads were fine for the most part. The only stretch with bad conditions was in the Yukon. When you see a little flag or a sign indicating a bumpy road up there, slow down - they mean it. Get a copy of the Milepost and make sure you know where the gas stations and lodgings are. Once you get up to northern BC and the Yukon, everything's pretty spread out. There are lots of places to camp too, if you're so inclined.

The farthest distance between gas stops is roughly 100 miles. It's not a big deal. Come on up!

It's a great drive. Go for it! The roads are decent. There are some rough patches in northern Yukon and when you first enter AK depending on your route but they are totally manageable. Just slow down as mentioned.

You'll probably need to head out of Anchorage to find good fishing but people do try in town.
