I taught myself how to drive, after 32 years driving I have never had anyone teach me how to drive

While driving on icy roads takes some getting used to main thing to remember is to allow yourself much more time to react to the conditions of the road.
Plan to stop way before you get to the stoplight/sign.
Always allow as much room between you and the vehicle ahead of you.
Never make sudden moves with braking or steering, although learning to correct the vehicle in a skid you always turn into the direction of the skid IE.. If you rear wheels start to skid to the right turn toward the right.
The best way IMO to learn how to recover from this is to practice getting the car into a skid in a safe closed off parking lot (without parking curbs ) or on an open section where no traffic will be impeading your practice or other things you could damage your vehicle like tree and what not.

highschool parking lots after school hours, large parking areas like a Walmart usually has area at the far end that is open for practicing..hope you find a place as it would really help before taking a driving course.

Get a learner's permit and do what all us Parents of high schoolers do........
We let them start in the quite neighborhoods, and work their way out into traffic. Parking lots are usually pretty good too. High Schools after school are empty.

Well I don't personally have experience with the Driving schools here. I have seen quite a few of their cars around though. I'm sure you can get a few more quotes if you call around.
