Real quick, he's coming home in a moment. I am increasingly worried about my darling man. Cleaning up after dinner last night, the leftovers in his drinking glass smelled like pure alcohol like the kind the nurse rubs on your skin to clean before getting a shot at the doctor's office. Anyone familiar with alcoholic beverages, what strong drink could possibly smell that strong? Whatever it was, he mixed it with rum. It was the color of rum.

Cheap vodka.

Why can't you just ask him?

ok I asked him. He said that when leftover alcohol sits out overnight it gets a stronger smell. He said it was just rum. He showed me the bottle and read out loud that the alcohol percentage is 45%.

I guess I came to ask city-data folks because he is an alcoholic, albeit a very nice man & highly functioning. I'm just hesitant to confront any alcoholic about concerns because they tend to get defensive & deflect the concern.

Crappy vodka can smell like straight up rubbing alcohol.

Are you sure he's an alcoholic? The ones I've known didn't ordinarily have any "left over" drinks.

OMG

This is ER territory OP hope the insurance is paid.

He sounds like a serious alcoholic and I would think your Rubbing Alcohol guess is correct. He's treating himself to a rubbing alcohol/rum cocktail.

Not so Fun Fact: Police tased an Aboriginal man who had been drinking kerosene and he burst into flames.

Risky business, imbibing that much alcohol.

There's an easy way to test this.

Yes, I've known of some alcoholics who can't stop until every bottle in sight is empty.

But my dear man has somewhat dainty(?) tendencies like leaving a bite or two of every meal, and leaving a sip or two of every drink. It seems to be his subconscious way of expressing self-control and/or abundance & satisfaction.
