I like a good rye whiskey but I really just can't stomach drinking my hard liquor without a mixer. I usually drink whiskey with diet coke and I'm trying to elimiate soda from my diet, what is another common easy-to-make drink I can make with whiskey?

When drinking relatively cheap whiskey, I like to mix with sweet tea. I get the kind with cane sugar, no HFCS. Unsweet tea is ok too.

How about a classic like the Manhattan? Three parts Rye, one part Sweet Vermouth and a dash of Angostura Bitters...mix over ice or served very cold straight up with a cherry. Another nice option is 3 parts Rye Whiskey and one part Domaine Canton Ginger Liqueur, mix and serve over ice with a lemon wedge.

The classic is bourbon & branch water, though I think it's a shame to water down good whiskey. How about brewing a batch of ginger tea and using that as a mixer?

Try an Old Fashioned for a classic cocktail. I also like whiskey with cranberry juice or 1/2 cran - 1/2 soda water. I've also been known to put it in my iced tea (sweetened with stevia).

Just made up a batch of Old Fashioned's for cocktail hour on my back patio. Rye, sugar, bitters, orange wedge and a cherry, very tasty.

Old Fashion is the best way to go, but if you don't have the fruit in the house, do up a Manhattan.

A lot of good options so far - including the big trio that came to mind in Old Fashioned, Manhattan and Bourbon & Branch

You could go for a mint julep as well - although if you are looking at sugar as the reason for eliminating soda it may not be the best option

Tender Knob is good (although I honestly could never say I wanted a Tender Knob with a straight face........)
The Tender Knob Cocktail Recipe | Liquor.com

That site is good for exploring as well - on the recipe page for "base spirit" click on the american whiskey and it will open up more options
