Check out Saranac. You should be able to find it in New York.
Yep. Saranac was my go-to when a poor grad student in North Carolina. The only one I typically drink now is the Black Forest, but most are fairly decent beers.

Shiner Bock is still my go-to summer beer. When I go to the liquor store, I buy a 12-pack of SB and twelve of a selection of others. It's easy drinking for after you mow the lawn, but still has flavor.
Sam Adams, you can pick up a case at Sam's Club for a real decent price. Leinenkugels is good too, (now owned by Miller Coors) and they alway seem to ahve a sale on around SuperBowl time.
It's hard to know what the cheaper alternatives are in your area because market conditions and taxes can substantially affect the price and availability of individual products or the percentage price difference between products. That said, if you're looking for a basic pilsner style beer and the craft beers are a little hard on the wallet, I've found that Moosehead offers the best bang for the buck among the readily available mass-brews.
Blue Moon is as cheap as you'll get for a Belgian-style witbier. Anheuser-Busch has a competing version called Shock Top Wheat.
Is that what you think good beer is or that I implied?
