Hey guys,
Need some thoughts about how I might be able to manage in Albuquerque. I'm back from teaching English abroad and crashing at my parents place, where the sense of independence is being sucked out of me. I don't really feel rooted to my hometown, and am ready to adventure again!

I have about 3,000 in cash, and just want to pack up and go though it's something I've never done before without a planning. I just am going out of my mind TRYING to work out all the little details and think its best if I just take off and figure it out as I go.

I've been looking at Albuquerque for a combination of reasons- UNM (thinking about grad school), the diversity, and scenery. I would be willing to do odd jobs for accommodation until I can find a job or two that will help me get some grounding.

Thoughts on Albuquerque as a whole? Can I find a community with peaceful living, culture? Is it an area where I can navigate without having to drive a lot? On the random relocation factor? On the social scene and diversity? Cost of living and open-mindedness...

on a couch to crash on for a couple weeks?

Any thoughts would be great! Thanks!

Just do it. Over thirty years ago I lived in the Chicago area and was living with mom and got so tired of it I just took off for Arizona. I had been there a few times passing through and loved it. I made the move and have never ever regretted it. All my family is still there and I see them every year or two and we talk all the time on the phone, but I just could not take it any longer. You have got to at least give it try. Go for it or you may forever regret it.

I would not advise coming out here without a job. The economy is awful, the jobs lack hours and do not pay well at all. It is beautiful here, but as they say it is the land of 'entrapment'. My fiance and I just moved here thinking it would be a great place to escape also and we are struggling here now more than ever. As for diversity, there isn't much. if you are looking for a place that is a cultural melting pot, don't come here. The only diversity is Spanish culture, and there is much more to the world than that! People are prejudice here against other races and are about 10 years behind in everything.

Don't let a Native American hear you say that.

Seriously natthebat, obviously if you think the only "diversity" in ABQ is hispanic, you must not get out much or aren't looking very hard. What about Sandia pueblo which is right outside of ABQ, or Isleta? Not to mention ABQ is surrounded by pueblo lands, and a lot of the people who attend UNM and CNM are native students. What about the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center? There are plenty of caucasian people living in ABQ as well! True a lot of people in the area are Hispanic, but either you just have no idea how the tell the difference between hispanics, natives, and caucasians, or you are blind.

Go for it. You're young with nothing to hold you back. You won't know until you try.

We made the move, sight unseen; and absolutely love it here.

$3000 is not going to get you very far without a job already lined up.

Continue to save, come visit, make sure you like it, get a job and then relocate.
