I am going to be checking out New Mexico very soon...perhaps ready for a May relocation... (if every domino falls exactly as I intend them too...bwuhahaha[moustache twirl, moustache twirl])....

Alright locals...hit me with the best place to get authentic New Mex...$10 range...as in the perfect lunch spot to go after a lot of flatfoot apartment searching....

I will choose the winner and write a review here when I return...

I don't know if you'd classify this place as authentic for the cuisine, but the building itself has a lot of history. If you're in Old Town, check out Church Street Cafe. It's on the road behind the church. The building is one of the oldest in the city and they also have a nice outdoor garden to eat when the weather is nice. I like going for breakfast, but lunch is fun as well.

Padilla's on Girard south of Indian School. They don't take credit cards, however, but the food is authentic New Mexican, good, and cheap. Be prepared to wait for a table.

You're right about the lines at Padilla's, but people seem to eat quickly there and the wait isn't too bad.

Besides, good things (like the food at Padilla's) are worth waiting for.

Thanks for all the great tips, you guys. I keep an NM restaurant list, and I have a few new ones here to add to it.

KensGirl: We were wandering around Old Town ABQ a couple of weeks ago, and we walked past the Church Street Cafe. It looked interesting; we'll eat there someday.

That's a good list, Abqsunport. Here are a couple more that I'd add to it . . . .
* The Range Cafe in Bernalillo (turkey wrap comes to mind)
* Calico Cafe on 4th (be sure to get some sticky buns from their bakery for dessert)

Okay, this is NOT any kind of Mexican food, but the best lunch deal I have seen in town is at this German restaurant on the corner of Candelaria and, I think, San Mateo (or San Pedro?) Anyway, they have a $5 lunch special that comprises a sandwich, cookie, chips and a drink, and the food is great. At least they did have that special about a year ago, I hope they still do.
